IN the eccentric-orbit binary model1,2, a compact object is in an eccentric orbit around a more massive, slightly evolved star. If the compact object accretes mass from the stellar wind of the normal star, the accretion rate is time dependent, so that the resulting X-ray emission would show a maximum at periastron (in the absence of absorption ...

The periodic transient X-ray sources
Nature, 1975THE transient X-ray sources Ariel 1118–61 and Ariel 0535 + 26 have periods of 405 s (ref. 1) and 114 s (ref. 2) respectively. Rappaport and McClintock3 reported the discovery of a 283-s period in the X-ray binary 3U0900–40 (a ‘continuous’ source) which is known to have an orbital period Porb = 8.95 d.

Gamma-ray production by particles escaping from a pulsar into the surrounding nebula is considered. The gamma-ray emission decreases with time and such pulsar-nebula complexes will be observed as transient sources.

The galactic distribution and physical nature of X-ray transient sources is investigated. Two types of transients are considered. The observational data on 41 X-ray transient sources are given, and the average parameters of hard and soft X-ray transients are estimated.

A rocket observation of cosmic soft X-rays suggests the existence of transient, recurrent soft X-ray sources which are found variable during the flight time of the rocket. Some of the soft X-ray sources thus far reported are considered to be of this time. These sources are listed in Table I, and their positions are shown in Figure 2.

Acoustic intensity measurements of transient noise sources
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1980The theoretical background to the measurement of sound energy flow generated by transient sources, such as impact machines, will be presented. Various means of implementing the estimation process will be discussed and reference will be made to the problems of field measurement.

One of the most striking results of Ariel 5 has been the large number of transient sources which has been observed, including what is probably a new type which is relatively short-lived and one near the Galactic Centre which is also probably distinct from the others since it was also observed as a radio source.

Discriminating Multiple Transient Point-Like Sources
SPIE Proceedings, 1989ABSTRACT The distinguishing of point -like man made gamma ray sources from point like astrophysical or cosmological sources can be achieved by analyzing the line structure of the gamma ray spectrum in the 0.5 - 10 MeV energy range. A special computer program has been developed for this analysis and tested in Monte Carlo simulations.
