The three-dimensional evolution of a plane mixing layer. Part 2: Pairing and transition to turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes
The evolution of three-dimensional temporally evolving plane mixing layers through as many as three pairings was simulated numerically. Initial conditions for all simulations consisted of a few low-wavenumber disturbances, usually derived from linear ...

Unlocking Plant‐Derived Potential: Regulating Microcrystalline Structure Design of High‐performance Hard Carbon Anodes via Cellulose Molecules

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The microcrystalline structure of hard carbon derived from green sandalwood is modulated by controlling the steric hindrance effect of the precursor, thereby significantly enhancing ion diffusion kinetics. When utilized in sodium‐ion batteries, it demonstrates excellent cycle life, exceeding 7000 cycles, as well as superior low‐temperature performance,

Intermittency in the Transition to Turbulence for a Shear-Thinning Fluid in Hagen-Poiseuille Flow

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics, 2014
Since Reynolds original experiments in 1883, very few studies have been carried out on the transition to turbulence for shear thinning fluid in Hagen-Poiseuille.

Symbolic regression modelling of the linear growth rates of stationary cross-flow instabilities

open access: yesFlow
Accurately predicting the growth rates of stationary cross-flow instabilities is crucial for understanding transition mechanisms in swept-wing configurations, which can significantly impact aerodynamic performance.

On the Influence of High Turbulence on the Convective Heat Flux on the High-Pressure Turbine Vane LS89

open access: yesInternational Journal of Turbomachinery, Propulsion and Power, 2019
High-pressure turbine vanes and blades are subjected to a turbulent combustor flow affecting the heat transfer and boundary layer transition, hence, the temperature distribution.

Bioinspired Morphology‐Decoupled Soft Gripper with Enhanced Bidirectional Grasping Capability

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inspired by biological predation, a novel gripper decouples cross‐modal grasping via dual morphological configurations. Synergistically integrating hybrid rigid and soft coupled fingers with a metamaterial palm, the system performs active compliant grasping for static objects and passive cage capture for dynamic targets.

Direct Numerical Simulation of Boundary Layer Transition Induced by Roughness Elements in Supersonic Flow

open access: yesAerospace
Current research on the transition mechanisms induced by moderate-height roughness elements remains insufficiently explored. Hence, direct numerical simulation (DNS) and BiGlobal stability analysis are employed in this study to investigate boundary layer

The Use of Transition Region Characteristics to Improve the Numerical Simulation of Heat Transfer in Bypass Transitional Flows

open access: yesInternational Journal of Rotating Machinery, 1995
A method is presented for improving the numerical prediction of bypass transition heat transfer on a flat plate in a high-disturbance environment with zero or favorable pressure gradient.

Phase Transition to Turbulence via Moving Fronts

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters
Directed percolation (DP), a universality class of continuous phase transitions, has recently been established as a possible route to turbulence in subcritical wall-bounded flows. In canonical straight pipe or planar flows, the transition occurs via discrete large-scale turbulent structures, known as puffs in pipe flow or bands in planar flows, which ...
