Transition to turbulence in ferrofluids

open access: yes, 2015
It is known that in classical fluids turbulence typically occurs at high Reynolds numbers. But can turbulence occur at low Reynolds numbers? Here we investigate the transition to turbulence in the classic Taylor-Couette system in which the rotating fluids are manufactured ferrofluids with magnetized nanoparticles embedded in liquid carriers.

Transition to turbulence in a shear flow

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 1999
We analyze the properties of a 19 dimensional Galerkin approximation to a parallel shear flow. The laminar flow with a sinusoidal shape is stable for all Reynolds numbers Re. For sufficiently large Re additional stationary flows occur; they are all unstable.

Multi‐scale Optimization on Interfacial Evaporative Cooling for Photovoltaic Performance Enhancement

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a passive siphon‐driven interfacial evaporative cooling technology for photovoltaics. A multiscale multiphysics model is developed and validated experimentally. Results show that optimizing installation parameters reduces operating temperature by up to 22.3 °C and boosts power efficiency by 8.9%, offering a practical pathway for ...

Transition mechanisms in hypersonic wind-tunnel nozzles: a methodological approach using global linear stability analysis

open access: yesFlow
Base-flow computations and stability analyses are performed for a hypersonic wind tunnel nozzle at a Mach number of 6. Isothermal and adiabatic wall boundary conditions are investigated, and moderate stagnation conditions are used to provide ...

Concurrently Achieving 4.6 W/M2 and 120,000 Cyclability Enabled by Extendable Swing Arms in Rotational Triboelectric Nanogenerator

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A rotational energy harvesting device that successfully reconciles high power density with mechanical durability through a hybrid sliding‐and‐bouncing kinematic mechanism is reported. The success reported in our paper includes addressing a dilemma where enhanced electrical output comes at the cost of increased friction and wear, limiting the practical ...

Observations of Transition from Imbalanced to Balanced Kinetic Alfvénic Turbulence

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
We report observations of solar wind turbulence derived from measurements by the Parker Solar Probe. Our findings reveal the emergence of finite magnetic helicity within the transition range of the turbulence, aligning with signatures of kinetic Alfvén ...

Numerical simulation of slot jet impingement heat transfer based on one-equation intermittency transition model

open access: yesZhongguo Jianchuan Yanjiu
[Objectives]Since the jet impingement phenomena involves the problems of laminar-turbulence transition process, strong adverse pressure gradient and separated fluid, it is difficult to predict the phenomenon by using the traditional turbulence models ...

Transition to turbulence in plane channel flow [PDF]

open access: yes
A numerical simulation of the final stages of transition to turbulence in plane channel flow is reported. Three dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are numerically integrated to obtain the time-evolution of two and three dimensional ...

Transition to turbulence in laminar hypersonic flow [PDF]

open access: yes
Progress in a recently started project aimed at the prediction of transition to turbulence in hypersonic flow is briefly discussed. The prediction of transition to turbulence is a very important issue in the design of space vessels.
