Abstract An analysis of the conceptual framework for analysing the translation technique of the Old Latin Gospels. The terminology found in Cicero, Augustine, and Jerome is summarized, along with modern terms such as ’formal equivalence’ and ’dynamic equivalence’. An approach is adopted based on modern language‐contact studies.

But what linguistic and translation changes did Jerome make, apart from changes deriving from his different underlying Greek text (Vorlage)? It is argued that Jerome's revision is in general more literal than the original.
