THE MEASUREMENT AND DECOMPOSITION OF COST-INEFFICIENCY: THE TRANSLOG COST SYSTEM *
Oxford Economic Papers, 1991Using a flexible translog cost function, this paper introduces an error specification to incorporate costs of technical and allocative inefficiencies. First, the maximum likelihood method is developed to obtain consistent parameter estimates of the cost function. These estimates are then used to measure costs of technical and allocative inefficiencies.

Inter-Fuel Substitution Possibilities: A Translog Application to Intercountry Data
International Economic Review, 1977One of the pressing issues in current energy policy debates in both the U. S. and other consuming countries is the feasibility of substantially reducing the use of crude oil. In some energy consuming sectors suchl as transportation, the shortrun mechanism to reduce consumption is through lower utilization of energyconsuming equipment while in the long ...

A Comparison of the Translog and Almost Ideal Demand Models [PDF]
A version of the Translog demand system is compared with the Almost Ideal demand model within a time series setting, where variables are nonstationary, by testing both models for the theoretical demand propositions of 'homogeneity, symmetry and negativity' and by comparing out of sample forecasting performance. Demographic age and income distributional

Translog Cost Functions: An Application for Mexican Manufacturing.
2007We use translog cost functions to estimate own-price and substitution elasticities of input demands, economies of scale and average costs in Mexican manufacturing. Data from the Mexican Annual Industrial Survey is used for 1996, 2000 and 2003. We show that a model that allows for nonhomotheticity and nonunitary elasticities of substitution is ...
