Transmission congestion and expansion under regional transmission organizations

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 2002
A procedure to generate a list of benefits and optimal ca- pacity combinations for transmission path upgrades is suggested. Opti- mal upgrading of transmission can be identified from such a list. The benefits computed are a measure of congestion in the system.

Deregulated environment transmission expansion planning

2011 IEEE EUROCON - International Conference on Computer as a Tool, 2011
The Transmission System Operator (TSO) is responsible for the power system operation. It has to provide the transmission network maintenance and development, having as a goal the safety, reliable and economical operation of the power system. Additionally, it has to fulfil the environment constraints and, most important, to support the development of ...

National Transmission Expansion for Decarbonization

2022
This session will cover a wide variety of issues related to transmission expansion at a national level to decarbonize the energy economy. What kind of transmission topology is needed to maintain reliability in a decarbonized future? What role does offshore wind transmission play?

Transmission expansion planning: A review

2016 International Conference on Energy Efficient Technologies for Sustainability (ICEETS), 2016
Modern electric power systems consist of large-scale highly complex interconnected transmission systems and, thus, transmission expansion planning (TEP) has become a significant power system optimization problem in real time application. The TEP problem is a large scale, complex and nonlinear combinatorial problem of mixed integer nature where the ...

PSO based transmission network expansion

2013 48th International Universities' Power Engineering Conference (UPEC), 2013
The authors are focusing on transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. The development algorithm has been implemented within a software tool. Two case studies have been used to present the results: IEEE 24 RTS (well-known from the literature) and 25 buses test power system (developed within the ...

Market-based transmission expansion planning

2011 IEEE/PES Power Systems Conference and Exposition, 2011
This paper presents a market-based transmission expansion planning model and compares it with a traditional reliability-based transmission planning model. Reliability-based transmission planning tries to install new lines at minimal cost while fulfilling system reliability criteria.

Constellation Expansion for 100G Transmission

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2013
In this letter, we focus on coherently detected, non differentially encoded, polarisation division multiplexed 100G communication systems; through incorporating phase noise in the channel model, we assess the net coding gain achievable by various constellations that can be used in lieu of the conventional quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK).

Merchant Transmission Expansion Based on Financial Transmission Rights

Proceedings of the 38th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2005
Long-term financial transmission rights (FTRs) could be used to create incentives for transmission investments. However, these new investments may cause negative externalities on pre-existing FTRs. Therefore the system operator needs a protocol for awarding incremental FTRs for new transmission capacity that maximize investors' preferences while ...

Merchant transmission: A new approach to transmission expansion

IEEE PES General Meeting, 2010
Prior to restructuring of the electric supply industry in the 1990s, virtually all transmission expansion was centrally planned, developed, financed, owned and operated by utilities with significant generation and transmission interests. The costs were added to the utilities rate base and included in power rates.

Transmission Adequacy for Renewable Energy: A Transmission Expansion Model

2020 9th International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Application (ICRERA), 2020
This paper evaluates the adequacy of a transmission network interconnecting a set of economic area nodes. Within an economic area, it is assumed that there is a pooled market for electrical energy exchange. In developing renewable resources, an existing transmission system might need reinforcement to facilitate interregional utilization.
