How Does a Delicate Insect Wing Resist Damage? Chitin Orientation Is Adapted to the Mechanical Demands at the Nanoscale

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoscale chitin fiber orientations in the insect wing play a critical role in adapting to complex mechanical demands. These findings reveal two distinct and functionally adaptive chitin orientation patterns in the membranes that vary regionally, optimizing mechanical resilience and deformation control.

Mass‐Manufactured Gradient Plasmonic Metasurfaces for Enhanced Mid‐IR Spectrochemical Analysis of Complex Biofluids

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a surface‐enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) platform using mass‐manufactured gradient plasmonic metasurfaces, overcoming limitations in analyzing real‐world biosamples. The technology achieves 20‐fold signal enhancement and demonstrates superior molecular fingerprinting capabilities.

Decoupling Transport of Salt Ions and Water in Hierarchically Structured Hydrogel for High Salinity Desalination

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchically structured hydrogel evaporator enables controlled decoupling of salt‐ion and water transport pathways for efficient solar desalination in hypersaline environments. Engineered radial and vertical channels direct salt away from the evaporative interface, enhancing water evaporation and ambient energy harvesting via a cold‐surface effect.
