Summary: In electrorheological fluids (ER-fluids) fibers are formed upon application of an electric field. This renders the fluid transversely isotropic. Studying transverse isotropy from a purely phenomenological point of view in its simplest form reveals that yield stresses have to be reckoned with, be they shear stresses or normal stresses.
