The effects of transverse isotropy on reflection amplitude versus offset

Abstract Studies have shown that elastic properties of materials such as shale and chalk are anisotropic. With the increasing emphasis on extraction of lithology and fluid content from changes in reflection amplitude with shot-to-group offset, one needs to know the effects of anisotropy on reflectivity.

Acoustoelasticity is an ultrasonic technique which has been used for the determination of active and residual stresses in common structural materials. This paper examines the effect of texture on the acoustoelastic response in polycrystalline bodies. In particular materials which are transversely isotropic aggregates of cubic crystals are studied.
