We report a case of atraumatic dislocation of the trapeziometacarpal joint secondary to osteoarthritis. An attritional rupture of the anterior oblique carpometacarpal ligament is thought to have occurred, allowing complete dislocation which has led to a reduction in the patient’s pain.

Simple trapezectomy for treatment of trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis of the thumb

This is a review of 20 patients (22 operations) with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint who were treated by simple trapezectomy without interposition material. They were all women with a mean age of 60 years (46-77). The average follow-up was 2 years, ranging from 8 months to 3 years.

Trapeziometacarpal Joint Arthrodesis for Osteoarthritis

Fifty-two cases of trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis were treated with arthrodesis using small staple fixation. Eighty-five per cent of the patients were free of pain, with normal thumb. Opposition to the fourth finger tip was always possible and opposition to the little finger tip was observed in 94% of cases.
