Novel and unscrutinized immune entities of the zebrafish gut

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Understudied cells of the zebrafish immune system include bona fide immune cells and epithelial (‐derived) cells with immune functions. Research focusing on zebrafish cells which demonstrate similarities to mammalian immune cell counterparts may help us understand the pathologies in which they are implicated. Currently available and advanced tools make

Epidemiology of traumatic falls after Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico

open access: yesInjury Epidemiology, 2020
Background Hurricanes are among the most devastating natural disasters, playing a significant role in public health. Currently, the epidemiology of fall-related injuries after the occurrence of a tropical storm is not well described.

A simple method for decellularizing a cell-derived matrix for bone cell cultivation and differentiation

open access: yesJournal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine, 2021
The extracellular matrix regulates cell survival, proliferation, and differentiation. In vitro two-dimensional cell experiments are typically performed on a plastic plate or a substrate of a single extracellular matrix constituent such as collagen or ...

Imeglimin attenuates liver fibrosis by inhibiting vesicular ATP release from hepatic stellate cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Imeglimin, at clinically relevant concentrations, inhibits vesicular ATP accumulation and release from hepatic stellate cells, thereby attenuating purinergic signaling and reducing fibrogenic activation. This mechanism reveals a newly identified antifibrotic action of imeglimin beyond glycemic control.

Ischemic postconditioning ameliorates acute kidney injury induced by limb ischemia/reperfusion via transforming TLR4 and NF-κB signaling in rats

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, 2021
Background The present study investigated the influence of ischemic postconditioning (I-postC) on the adjustment of renal injury after limb ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, to elucidate the mechanisms of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR 4)/NF-κB signaling

Protein kinase FAM20C—when subcellular localization matters

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
FAM20C is a Golgi‐resident kinase that phosphorylates proteins along the entire secretory pathway. The presence of potential FAM20C substrates in the cytoplasm or nucleus raises the question of how the kinase and its substrates encounter each other. Protein kinases achieve signaling specificity through consensus sequence recognition and subcellular ...

Evaluation of the clinical effectiveness of bioactive glass (S53P4) in the treatment of non-unions of the tibia and femur: study protocol of a randomized controlled non-inferiority trial

open access: yesTrials, 2018
Background Treatment of non-union remains challenging and often necessitates augmentation of the resulting defect with an autologous bone graft (ABG). ABG is limited in quantity and its harvesting incurs an additional surgical intervention leaving the ...

Adjunctive hemoperfusion with Resin Hemoadsorption (HA) 330 cartridges improves outcomes in patients sustaining multiple Blunt Trauma: a prospective, quasi-experimental study

open access: yesBMC Surgery, 2023
Background Multi-organ dysfunction syndrome and multi-organ failure are the leading causes of late death in patients sustaining severe blunt trauma. So far, there is no established protocol to mitigate these sequelae.

Should we change our approach to resuscitating victims of femoral fracture? A clinical experience in a busy trauma hospital in Shiraz, Iran

open access: yesChinese Journal of Traumatology, 2021
Purpose: Traumatic hemorrhagic shock is a life-threatening event worldwide. Severe brain trauma accompanying femoral fractures can trigger inflammatory responses in the body and increase pre-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1.
