Time to definitive care within major trauma networks in England

This article describes timelines from emergency service activation to urgent surgery for seriously injured patients in England following implementation of regional trauma networks in 2012. Analysis showed that seriously injured patients undergoing secondary transfer to definitive care had delayed imaging, delayed surgery and increased mortality.

Factors affecting mortality after traumatic brain injury in a resource‐poor setting

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in 194 patients in a resource‐poor setting was analysed. Some 30·9 per cent had severe TBI, and associated skull fracture was observed in 8·8 per cent. Treatments offered were mainly conservative. The mortality rate was 33·0 per cent, with 72 per cent resulting from severe head injury.

Trauma models to identify major trauma and mortality in the prehospital setting

Currently available prehospital trauma models perform reasonably in predicting in‐hospital mortality, but are inadequate at identifying patients who have experienced major trauma. Future research should focus on which patients would benefit from treatment in a major trauma centre.

Epidemiology of paediatric injuries in Rwanda using a prospective trauma registry

This study evaluated the demographics and outcomes of paediatric injury in Rwanda through a prospective trauma registry to inform capacity‐building for prevention and treatment. Patients treated in the capital city had a higher incidence of head injury and a higher overall injury‐related mortality than those in a rural town.
