The impact of travel time variability and travelers’ risk attitudes on the values of time and reliability

Transportation Research Part B: Methodological, 2016
Abstract In this paper, we derive implementable measures of travelers’ willingness to pay to save travel time ( vot ) and to improve the reliability ( vor ) of a given trip. We set out a simple microeconomic model of transport mode choice in which each trip is fully characterized by its price and the statistical distribution of its random travel ...

Variable damping factors in travel time tomography

Journal of Applied Geophysics, 1997
Abstract In travel time tomography, the evaluation of the problems regarding the introduction of priori information requires special attention. In this article, we analyze the importance of data measurement errors and the ‘damping factors’ in the solution of a system of linear equations.

Travel Time Variability versus Freeway Characteristics

2006 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference, 2006
Travel times on freeways are variable due to variations both in demand and in capacity. For example, the volume of traffic which a road can handle on one day may cause severe congestion on the next due to for example adverse weather affecting capacity.

Travel time variability

2008
Increasing traffic leads to increasing severity, spatial extension and duration of congestion. Congestion has two immediate consequences. One is that travel times increase on average. Another is that travel times become increasingly variable and unpredictable. When performing economic appraisal of transport policies it is important to account for both.

Prediction of travel time variability for cost-benefit analysis

open access: yesTransportation Research, Part A: Policy and Practice, 2012
Unreliable travel times cause substantial costs to travelers. Nevertheless, they are often not taken into account in cost-benefit analyses (CBA), or only in very rough ways.

Sensitivity to travel time variability: Travelers’ learning perspective

Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies, 2005
This paper discusses the effect of the feedback mechanism on route-choice decision-making under uncertainty. Recent ITS (intelligent transportation systems) applications have highlighted the need for better models of the behavioral processes involved in travel decisions.

Determinants of Travel Choice Behaviour with Travel-Time Variability in the Presence of Real-Time Information

International Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems Research, 2018
This paper provided a statistical analysis of route and departure time choice behaviour under the effects of travel-time variability and real-time information for commuters in Japan using a web-based stated preference survey data. Furthermore, we developed a model predicting the relationship between the shift in average travel time and its reliability ...

Consequences of mixing assumptions for time‐variable travel time distributions

Hydrological Processes, 2014
AbstractThe current generation of catchment travel time distribution (TTD) research, integrating nearly three decades of work since publication of Water's Journey from Rain to Stream, seeks to represent the full distribution in catchment travel times and its temporal variability. Here, we compare conceptualizations of increasing complexity with regards

The variable radius covering problem with fuzzy travel times

International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, 2010
Location Set Covering Problem (LSCP) is a traditional problem in the location literature. LSCP is used in locating fire stations, computer networks, and many other service facilities. This paper proposes a covering problem with variable radii. In this problem, the cost to establish a facility is a monotonically increasing function of distance to the ...

Clustering Approach for Assessing the Travel Time Variability of Arterials

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2014
Travel time variability may significantly influence a driver's route choice. Urban infrastructure managers are interested in reliable estimation of travel time, which could provide better information to drivers, encourage reassignment on the network, and optimize use of the network. This study addresses arterials in undersaturated conditions with known
