A new sledge microtome to combine wood anatomy and tree-ring ecology

IAWA Journal, 2015
Based on the Reichert Om E microtome a more sophisticated, nevertheless solely mechanically operated microtome was developed enabling to section specimens of various forms and sizes. The materials used and the special construction of the microtome resulted in a higher stability of the moving parts whilst simultaneously reducing weight.

Wood Anatomy and Tree-Ring Structure and Their Importance for Tropical Dendrochronology

2010
In Amazonian floodplain forests, the flood pulse results in an alternating aquatic and terrestrial phase per year. Consequentially, trees react with cambial dormancy, resulting in differing wood anatomical structures that appear as rings in the cross-section of the trees stem.

Anatomy of the vessel network within and between tree rings of Fraxinus lanuginosa (Oleaceae)

American Journal of Botany, 2004
The three‐dimensional (3‐D) arrangement of vessels and the vessel‐to‐vessel connections in the secondary xylem of the stem of the ring‐porous hardwood tree Fraxinus lanuginosa were studied in series of thick transverse sections with epifluorescence microscope and confocal laser scanning microscope. Vessels were traced in sequential sections, and vessel

Learning from the past to improve in the future: tree-ring wood anatomy as retrospective tool to help orchard irrigation management

Acta Horticulturae, 2022
Tree-ring annual growth and wood anatomical traits were used for the retrospective analysis of the impact of hydro-climatic conditions on the orchard irrigation management. Data were collected in the oldest (20 years), in full-production, orchards of Emilia-Romagna (Italy), one of the most important Italian Region for fruit production.

The “blue ring”: anatomy and formation hypothesis of a new tree-ring anomaly in conifers

Trees, 2014
Key message Double-stained microsections from high altitude Pinus nigra wood cores highlighted unlignified latewood cells possibly linked to abrupt temperature reduction at the end of the growing season. More consolidated detection could increase their role in dendroecology. Abstract Cambial activity and wood formation are influ- enced by environmental

Variations of Wood Anatomy and δ13C Within-Tree Rings of Coastal Pinus Pinaster Showing Intra-Annual Density Fluctuations

IAWA Journal, 2007
We investigated the variation of wood anatomical characteristics and carbon isotopic composition of tree rings showing intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) in plants of Pinus pinaster Ait. growing at a coastal plantation in Tuscany (Italy).

Exploring tree-ring anatomy to improve hydroclimate reconstructions in Northern Europe

The extreme European summer heat-droughts of 2003 and 2018, compounded by the threat of continued climate change, highlight the need to better understand the frequency, severity and seasonality of such events. The widths of annual tree rings currently provide the most detailed and spatially complete proxy information of European hydroclimate of the ...

The response of δ13C, δ18O and cell anatomy of Larix gmelinii tree rings to differing soil active layer depths

Dendrochronologia, 2015
Abstract Global warming is most pronounced in high-latitude regions by altering habitat conditions and affecting permafrost degradation, which may significantly influence tree productivity and vegetation changes. In this study, by applying a “space-for-time” approach, we selected three plots of Larix gmelinii forest from a continuous permafrost zone ...

Tree-ring wood anatomy and stable isotopes show structural and functional adjustments in olive trees under different water availability

Plant and Soil, 2013
Olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is a drought-tolerant tree species cultivated in Mediterranean-type environments. Although it is tolerant to drought, dry conditions decrease its productivity. A thorough analysis of the hydraulic architecture and wood anatomical plasticity, as well as of their physiological significance, is needed to understand how olive ...
