Development of the sorus in tree ferns: Dicksoniaceae
Studies of soral development in the tree-fern family Dicksoniaceae in comparison with the Cyatheaceae led to (1) recognition of two basic patterns in the Dicksoniaceae, (2) clarification of marginal versus superficial sori and their indusia in tree ...

Evidence for regulation of transpiration in nonstomatal plants: insights from bryophyte gametophytes
Kinetics of cell wall water vapor potential (Ψcw) and resistance of cell wall and plasmatic membrane to water flux in response to cytoplasmic water potential (Ψcyt) during dehydration. Ψcyt was calculated from the WC at any moment of the dehydration curve by using the relationship between −1/Ψw and WC of pressure volume curves and assuming Ψw = Ψcyt ...

Acquiring sufficient nitrogen(N)to meet requirements for growth is a major challenge for epiphytes living in nutrient-poor canopy habitats. Cyanolichens(lichens that contain cyanobacterial symbionts)can function as the primary participants in biological ...

Population genetic structure in the Pacific Northwest for (a–c) Nereocystis and (d–f) Macrocystis. Summary Pockets of the formerly glaciated Pacific coastline of North America likely remained ice‐free throughout the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). These areas may have served as refugia for terrestrial species, but less is known about their role in the ...

The heterocyst‐rich Encephalartos natalensis cyanobacterial zone in coralloid root suggests co‐option of conserved symbiosis‐associated genes. This figure was created in BioRender (BioRender.com/https://BioRender.com/n3qveqc). Summary Plant‐cyanobacterial symbioses have evolved independently at least four times across land plants, yet their underlying ...

The influence of tree ferns on the composition and structure of New Zealand native forests
Tree ferns are an abundant, ubiquitous and conspicuous feature of New Zealand’s indigenous forests, creating shady understories and substantially contributing to litterfall, amongst other effects.

ABSTRACT Biotic stresses, particularly Verticillium wilt (VW), lead to a global decline in cotton yields. Here, we demonstrate that ectopic expression of ScALDH21, a gene from the desiccation‐tolerant moss Syntrichia caninervis Mitt. and absent in angiosperms, enhances cotton's resistance to VW.
