A New Species of Arthropteris From Samoa

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Botany, Volume 64, Issue 2, June 2026.
A new species, Arthropteris samoensis (Arthropteridaceae), recorded from the Samoan islands of Upolu and Savai‘i, is described and illustrated. In Samoa, the new species is distinguished from Arthropteris palisotii s.l. by its smaller stature and more delicate texture (laminae mostly < 3 cm wide vs.

A review of the uptake of sustainable climate‐smart aquaculture in sub‐Saharan Africa

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract As climate change reshapes agriculture and food systems across the globe, aquaculture in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) is at a turning point. Sustainable climate‐smart aquaculture (SCSAq) aims to make fish farming more productive, resilient to climate change, and environmentally friendly while also improving livelihoods and nutrition.

Tree and tree-like species of Mexico: gymnosperms, monocotyledons, and tree ferns

open access: yes, 2010
"Trees or tree-like plants are defined here broadly as perennial, self-supporting plants with an adult height of at least 5 m (without ascending leaves or inflorescences), and with 1 or several erect stems with a diameter of at least 10 cm. We present an updated list of all Mexican tree species under that definition in the Gymnospermae (86 species, 38%

Beyond red/far‐red sensing: phytochrome perception of the marine light field by microalgae

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 5, Page 2837-2844, June 2026.
Summary Phytochromes (PHYs) are a major group of photoreceptors, described as red and far‐red light sensors in land plants. Recent genomic and metagenomic explorations have revealed the presence of PHYs also in various eukaryotic microalgae originating from distinct endosymbiotic events.

Interactions Between Enrichment Planted Seedlings and Naturally Occurring Trees in Selectively Logged Lowland Dipterocarp Forest

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study analyzed the growth and survival of 721 seedlings in Malaysian Borneo in relation to their local neighbourhood of surrounding matrix trees. We found that both were positively influenced by canopy openness and the basal area of surrounding trees, highlighting the importance of light availability and the benefits of areas with more unlogged ...

Spatial Distribution and Conservation Prioritization of Medicinal Gymnosperms in China Using an Optimal Set‐Cover Approach

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
The study identified 41 priority conservation grids and 8 critical conservation gaps not covered by national reserves for medicinal gymnosperms. We proposed a practical, multi‐dimensional framework for their conservation. ABSTRACT To elucidate the geographical distribution patterns and hotspots of medicinal gymnosperms in China, providing a scientific ...

Trends in marine species distribution models: a review of methodological advances and future challenges

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 5, May 2026.
Correlative species distribution models (SDMs) are quantitative tools in biogeography and macroecology. Building upon the ecological niche concept, they correlate environmental covariates to species presence to model habitat suitability and predict species distributions.
