ESTUDIO PRELIMINAR DE COLECCIÓN DE SEMEN EN OSO DE ANTEOJOS (Tremarctos ornatus)

open access: yesRevista de Investigaciones Veterinarias del Perú, 2012
Semen was collected in a Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) reared in captivity using the electroejaculation technique. Four series of 6 volt discharges by 15 seconds each plus manual stimulation were carried out. An effective penis erection and small volume of ejaculate was obtained in the last series of electrical stimulus. Seminal motility was 50%.

Dietary ecology of the extinct cave bear: Evidence of omnivory as inferred from dental microwear textures [PDF]

open access: yesActa Palaeontologica Polonica, 2016
The diet of the extinct European cave bear, Ursus spelaeus, has widely been debated. Diverging from the extant brown bear (Ursus arctos) approximately 1.2 million years ago, the cave bear is one of the most ubiquitous fossil bears occurring in Europe ...

Estudio químico y parasitológico de muestras fecales del oso Andino (Tremarctos ornatus) provenientes de 2 reservas ecológicas, 2 zoológicos y un centro de rescate en el Ecuador [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The Andean Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), is the only one amongst its species found in South America, and currently listed as an endangered species. Studies have been conducted, however, very little is known about this species.

Morfología cráneo−mandibular del oso andino Tremarctos ornatus (Carnivora: Ursidae)

open access: yesTherya, 2013
We described and illustrated the skull and jaw of the andean bear Tremarctos ornatus , comparatively analyzing among individuals of different ages and sexes, and adults of other species of Ursidae. In ontogenetic level, we found the following morphological changes associated with senescence: obliteration of the sutures, crests development, widening

Was the giant short-faced bear a hyper-scavenger? A new approach to the dietary study of ursids using dental microwear textures.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Dramatic environmental changes associated with global cooling since the late Miocene, and the onset of glacial-interglacial cycles in the Pleistocene served as a backdrop to the evolutionary radiation of modern bears (family Ursidae). These environmental

Living high and at risk: predicting Andean bear occurrence and conflicts with humans in southeastern Peru

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2022
Human encroachment into wildlife habitat threatens the persistence of large carnivore populations because it shrinks their distribution and promotes conflicts related to agricultural and livestock damage.

Data access, distribution models, and stable isotopes: Merging approaches to improve bear distribution estimates and bear carnivory for conservation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
My dissertation aims to contribute to the knowledge of Andean bears in Peru. The Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is the sole bear species in south America.

Exploring dietary adaptations in Ursus minimus: a 3D geometric morphometric analysis of the mandible

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 55, Issue 2, Page 443-453, April 2026.
Using 3D geometric morphometrics, the dietary adaptations of the extinct Auvergne bear (Ursus minimus) are analysed. Its mandibular morphology aligns more closely with omnivorous rather than insectivorous bears, challenging current ideas. The extinct bear Ursus minimus, which lived in Europe during the Pliocene and possibly Early Pleistocene, is ...
