Does bigger mean sicker? A systematic review and meta‐analysis of the intraspecific relationship between host body size and parasite infection across vertebrate taxa

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Elucidating the determinants of parasite infection levels of individuals within a population is a basic but important step for understanding the roles of parasites in natural systems. Among intraspecific studies on vertebrate hosts and metazoan parasites, host body size (length/mass) is probably the most frequently reported factor determining parasite ...

Genetic Diversity and Phylogeography of Schistosoma mansoni from Guinea

open access: yesDiversity
Human schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by six Schistosoma species, the most widespread of which is S. mansoni. Despite its high prevalence in Africa, molecular data on the parasite remain scarce in many regions, including the ...

Assessing the Health Impacts of Contaminants on Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) Along the Southern Coast of Brazil

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Chemical pollutants pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Among these contaminants are trace elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Green turtles can be employed to evaluate the oceans' health due to their coastal habitats and exposure to multiple threats.

Pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) Under Siege: Main Infectious Diseases and Their Role in Aquaculture and Wild Populations Amidst Environmental Change

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 48, Issue 4, April 2025.
ABSTRACT The pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) is a key species for recreational and commercial fisheries in Argentina and holds significant aquaculture potential. It has been introduced to various countries worldwide, including Japan, where intensive aquaculture has developed.

Melanoma and Other Melanistic Lesions in Brown Bullhead Ameiurus nebulosus From Waterbodies in the Northeastern United States and Canada: Identification of Risk Factors

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Melanistic lesions, including non‐raised black areas due to proliferations of melanocytes and melanomacrophages in the dermis and epidermis, as well as raised black areas consistent with melanoma, are described in brown bullhead (BBH) Ameiurus nebulosus from three water bodies in the northeastern United States and Quebec, Canada.

A fine‐scale phylogenetic assessment of digenean trematodes in central Alberta reveals we have yet to uncover their total diversity

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
Despite over 100 years of digenean trematode parasite species descriptions, from a wide diversity of vertebrate and invertebrate host species, our ability to recognize the diversity of trematode species within a single lake remains an incredible ...

Challenging Host Specificity: Malacosporean Parasite Dynamics—Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae Beyond Salmonids—An Infection Experiment

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD) is a severe parasitic disease of salmonids caused by the malacosporean endoparasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae. In the fish intermediate host, the parasite is disseminated via the circulatory system and ultimately reaches the kidney, where it matures before releasing infective spores into the environment ...

Schistosome and liver fluke derived catechol-estrogens and helminth associated cancers

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2014
Infection with helminth parasites remains a persistent public health problem in developing countries. Three of these pathogens, the liver flukes Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini and the blood fluke Schistosoma haematobium, are of particular ...

Lymphocystis Disease in Endemic Aotearoa New Zealand Bully (Gobiomorphus cotidianus)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We detected lymphocystis disease virus (LCDV) for the first time in an Aotearoa New Zealand freshwater environment, from an individual common bully, toitoi, Gobiomorphus cotidianus (Eleotridae). Dinah's bully, Gobiomorphus dinae, and Kaharore bully, Gobiomorphus mataraerore, also exhibited gross nodular lesions on the fins but were not sampled.

Reproductive system abnormalities in Schistosoma mansoni adult worms isolated from Nectomys squamipes (Muridae: Sigmodontinae): brightfield and confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2003
Schistosoma mansoni adult worms with genital anomalies isolated from Nectomys squamipes (Muridae: Sigmodontinae) were studied by confocal laser scanning microscopy under the reflected mode. One male without testicular lobes (testicular agenesia/anorchism)
