Molecular and Antigenic Analysis of Treponemes

The treponemes comprise the essentially non-cultivable Treponema pallidum subspecies (agents of syphilis, yaws and other human trepanematoses), the gut pathogen of pigs, T. hydysenteriae, and a group of antigenically related, cultivable species, some of which are strongly implicated in human periodontal or gastrointestinal disease.

Uveitis and Intraocular Treponemes

A study of aqueous humor specimens from 50 patients with active uveitis of undetermined etiology revealed that six of these patients had organisms in their aqueous which were morphologically indistinguishable from Treponema pallidum . The organisms from five of these six reacted specifically with rabbit anti-T pallidum globulin.

Formation of multiple treponemes

The development of spherical bodies is preceded by the formation of unseparated helical forms and plait-like structures.
