Triatoma Virus Pathogenicity in Laboratory Colonies of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)
Journal of Medical Entomology, 1997In a survey of wild populations of Triatoma infestans (Klug) in Argentina, 10% were infected with Triatoma virus (TrV). The virus also was detected in a laboratory colony 18 mo after being established, with infection rates up to 100%. Mortality rate was 97.6% in nymphs and the molting process was inhibited, thereby increasing development time.

Kissing bugs in the genus Triatoma are obligate blood feeders that feed mainly on vertebrate blood and have lost the predatory lifestyle found in other reduviid bugs. They occasionally also feed on the hemolymph of arthropods, especially during the first

Feeding behaviour of Triatoma infestans, T. brasiliensis and T. pseudomaculata on pigeons and mice was compared by electronic monitoring of the cibarial pump. The methodology developed permits the study detailed of triatomine feeding behaviour using an artificial feeder as well as on live hosts. T. infestans was the species that fed most rapidly on the
