TRIATOMA INFESTANS, TO BE OR NOT TO BE AUTOGENIC?

Acta Tropica, 2022
Autogeny, the ability to develop eggs without a meal in the adult stage, has been described in several groups of arthropods, especially hematophagous Diptera Nematocera. In obligate hematophagous hemimetabolous insects that feed on blood in all their instars, such as Triatominae, this concept gives rise to species with apparently facultative autogeny ...

Control of pyrethroid‐resistant populations of Triatoma infestans, the main vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, by treating dogs with fluralaner in the Argentine Chaco

Medical and Veterinary Entomology, 2021
We assessed whether fluralaner administered to outbred healthy dogs reduced or supressed site infestation and abundance of pyrethroid‐resistant populations of Triatoma infestans Klug (Heteroptera: Reduviidae). We conducted a placebo‐controlled before‐and‐

Degradation of serum proteins in Triatoma infestans

Experimental Parasitology, 1976
It has been previously described (Perassi 1972, 1973)that no serum proteins from the animal on which the insects were fed can be detected in the insects' hemolymph of either male or female Triatoma infestans. In other words, the absorption of the proteins does not take place from the gut content to the hemolymph.

The occurrence of arachidonic acid in Triatoma infestans

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 1987
1. Gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were used to verify the presence of arachidonic acid (20:4 omega 6) in adult male and female organs of the blood-suckling bug Triatoma infestans. Fat body, gonad and head lipids were analyzed. 2. Male gonads contained the highest percentage of phospholipids and the highest percentage of arachidonic ...

Competitive displacement in Triatominae: the Triatoma infestans success [PDF]

open access: possibleTrends in Parasitology, 2006
Brazil has just been certificated by Pan American Health Organization as 'free of Chagas disease transmission due to Triatoma infestans'. During the early 1980s, this species of blood-sucking bug alone was considered responsible for approximately 80% of Chagas disease transmission. But it was not always so.

Triatoma Virus Pathogenicity in Laboratory Colonies of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)

Journal of Medical Entomology, 1997
In a survey of wild populations of Triatoma infestans (Klug) in Argentina, 10% were infected with Triatoma virus (TrV). The virus also was detected in a laboratory colony 18 mo after being established, with infection rates up to 100%. Mortality rate was 97.6% in nymphs and the molting process was inhibited, thereby increasing development time.

Nervous system of Triatoma infestans

Journal of Morphology, 1994
AbstractThe anatomy of the adult nervous system of the haematophagous bug Triatoma infestans has been studied by means of dissections and histology. The central nervous system comprises three nervous masses: the brain + suboesophageal ganglion, the prothoracic ganglion, and the posterior fused ganglion (meso + metathoracic + abdominal ganglia).

Population dynamics and control of Triatoma infestans

Medical and Veterinary Entomology, 1992
Abstract. Analysis of field populations of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), after a 3‐year study, shows that population growth rate is affected by both density‐dependent and density‐independent mortality. Although an equilibrium exists, apparently as a consequence of a density dependent‐mechanism, population density fluctuates throughout ...
