Degradation of serum proteins in Triatoma infestans
Experimental Parasitology, 1976It has been previously described (Perassi 1972, 1973)that no serum proteins from the animal on which the insects were fed can be detected in the insects' hemolymph of either male or female Triatoma infestans. In other words, the absorption of the proteins does not take place from the gut content to the hemolymph.

The occurrence of arachidonic acid in Triatoma infestans
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 19871. Gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were used to verify the presence of arachidonic acid (20:4 omega 6) in adult male and female organs of the blood-suckling bug Triatoma infestans. Fat body, gonad and head lipids were analyzed. 2. Male gonads contained the highest percentage of phospholipids and the highest percentage of arachidonic ...

Competitive displacement in Triatominae: the Triatoma infestans success [PDF]
Brazil has just been certificated by Pan American Health Organization as 'free of Chagas disease transmission due to Triatoma infestans'. During the early 1980s, this species of blood-sucking bug alone was considered responsible for approximately 80% of Chagas disease transmission. But it was not always so.

Nervous system of Triatoma infestans
Journal of Morphology, 1994AbstractThe anatomy of the adult nervous system of the haematophagous bug Triatoma infestans has been studied by means of dissections and histology. The central nervous system comprises three nervous masses: the brain + suboesophageal ganglion, the prothoracic ganglion, and the posterior fused ganglion (meso + metathoracic + abdominal ganglia).

Population dynamics and control of Triatoma infestans
Medical and Veterinary Entomology, 1992Abstract. Analysis of field populations of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), after a 3‐year study, shows that population growth rate is affected by both density‐dependent and density‐independent mortality. Although an equilibrium exists, apparently as a consequence of a density dependent‐mechanism, population density fluctuates throughout ...

Triatoma Virus Pathogenicity in Laboratory Colonies of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)
Journal of Medical Entomology, 1997In a survey of wild populations of Triatoma infestans (Klug) in Argentina, 10% were infected with Triatoma virus (TrV). The virus also was detected in a laboratory colony 18 mo after being established, with infection rates up to 100%. Mortality rate was 97.6% in nymphs and the molting process was inhibited, thereby increasing development time.

Transmission of Trypanosma cruzi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) occurs when feces/urine of infected triatomines come into contact with mucous membranes or damaged skin, and this occurs mainly when insects defecate while feeding on the host. Thus, the

The biting rate of Triatoma infestans in Argentina
Medical and Veterinary Entomology, 1991Abstract. The daily proportion of fed individuals in a population of the reduviid bug Triatoma infestans (Klug), maintained under natural climatic conditions in experimental chicken houses in central Argentina, was estimated from the proportion of bugs retaining colourless urine in the rectum.

Antigenic components in Triatoma infestans haemolymph
Journal of Insect Physiology, 1972Abstract Immunoelectrophoretic experiments were made of the antigenic composition of Triatoma infestans haemolymph, taking instar and feeding into consideration. Haemolymph from adult male insects against antiserum to haemolymph of T. infestans, revealed between 14 and 17 antigenic components.

Kinetics of expression of the salivary apyrases in Triatoma infestans
Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2004Apyrases are nucleoside triphosphate-diphosphohydrolases that remove Pi from ATP and ADP. The blood feeding reduviid Triatoma infestans, which transmits the Trypanosoma cruzi agent of Chagas disease to animals and man, presents in its salivary glands five apyrases with molecular masses of 88, 82, 79, 68 and 67 kDa.
