Embryonic patterning mutants in Tribolium castaneum

Development, 1996
ABSTRACT The identification and analysis of genes controlling segmentation in Drosophila melanogaster has opened the way for understanding similarities and differences in mechanisms of segmentation among the insects. Homologues of Drosophila segmentation genes have been cloned and their expression patterns have been analyzed in a variety

Cytogenetics of chromosome rearrangements inTribolium castaneum

Genome, 1995
The karyotype of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, was reexamined and improved by restriction enzyme banding with HpaII. After this treatment, each of the 10 chromosomes were identified in spermatogonial metaphase cells and 3 of the 8 autosomal bivalents and the XY pair were identified in spermatocyte metaphase I nuclei.

Mutational variance for pupa weight in Tribolium castaneum

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1989
Directional selection for heavier pupa weight in Tribolium castaneum was practiced for 18 generations in two replicates of an inbred line, each separately maintained in small population cages for more than 90 generations. Mutational variance was estimated in two ways, based on Hill's (1982a) prediction equation for response to directional selection ...

Individual and group selection for productivity in Tribolium castaneum

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1990
The usefulness of a non-random group selection method in the improvement of a character influenced by interactions among individuals has been experimentally tested in a population of Tribolium castaneum. The selected trait -number of adults produced in a fixed period of time -showed a clear increase after 11 generations of selection.

Sturdy cycles in the chaotic Tribolium castaneum data series

Theoretical Population Biology, 2005
Because of the inherent discreteness of individuals, population dynamical models must be discrete variable systems. In case of strong nonlinearity, such systems interacting with noise can generate a great variety of patterns from nearly periodic behavior through complex combination of nearly periodic and chaotic patterns to noisy chaotic time series ...

The Energetics of Interactions in Populations of Tribolium confusum and Tribolium castaneum

Environmental Entomology, 1979
Caloric determinations were used to define and quantify interactions between populations of Tribolium confusum Duval and Tribolium castaneum Herbst reared at 25°, 30°, and 35°C. Caloric values of food consumed, respiration expenditures, and caloric values for life stages in single and mixed species populations were determined at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 ...

The karyosphere capsule in Tribolium castaneum oocytes

Cell and Tissue Biology, 2014
Structure and composition of the karyosphere (karyosome) capsule were studied in the oocytes of a laboratory insect, Tribolium castaneum, with the use of electron microscopy and immunoelectron cytochemistry. Basing on the study of nuclear structure dynamics, we distinguished 8 stages that characterize the period of oocyte growth. At the diplotene stage,

Sampling Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum in flour mill rollstands

Journal of Stored Products Research, 2013
Abstract Rollstands (Simons) in three Canadian flour mills were internally sampled and the number of adult and pupae Tribolium spp. present were counted. Middling rollstands had higher infestations than the break rollstands. The number of adult beetles inside the rollstands was compared to beetle activity seen outside the rollstands, which was ...

LINKAGE GROUP IV OFTRIBOLIUM CASTANEUM

Canadian Journal of Genetics and Cytology, 1972
A new recessive eye color mutant, hazel, of the flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, has been mapped in linkage group IV near the white locus, thus establishing the existence of a fourth pair of closely linked eye color genes in this species. A revision of linkage group IV is proposed.

Composition of the Odorous Secretion of Tribolium Castaneum

Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 1953
The abdominal and thoracic odoriferous glands of adult flour beetles, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), T. confusum J. du V., and T. destructor Uyttenb., contain a pungent, irritating liquid (Roth, 1943; Palm, 1946). Flour in which the beetles have built up a large population becomes pink in color due to contamination by this secretion (Chittenden, 1896 ...
