BeetleBase: the model organism database for Tribolium castaneum [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2007
BeetleBase (http://www.bioinformatics.ksu.edu/BeetleBase/) is an integrated resource for the Tribolium research community. The red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) is an important model organism for genetics, developmental biology, toxicology and comparative genomics, the genome of which has recently been sequenced.

Larval competition and genetic diversity in Tribolium castaneum [PDF]

open access: yesGenetics Selection Evolution, 1993
Compared the survival of sib groups and random groups of larvae of flour beetle maintained at high population density. Random groups survived longer, related to a higher early mortality, which reduced competition in the long run in these groups. A clear increase in between-group variability for survival was found in the sib groups, implying the ...

A Testis‐Specific Aralkylamine N‐Acetyltransferase Regulates Dimorphic Sperm Function and Male Fertility in Moths

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We identify a Lepidoptera‐conserved testis‐specific arylalkylamine N‐acetyltransferase (LTNAT) that governs male moth fertility via a novel mechanism. LTNAT loss disrupts eupyrene sperm mitochondrial derivatives and impairs apyrene sperm motility, offering a safe molecular target for innovative pesticides and genetic pest control.

Lack of support for Rensch's rule in an intraspecific test using red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) populations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Rensch's rule proposes a universal allometric scaling phenomenon across species where sexual size dimorphism (SSD) has evolved: in taxa with male‐biased dimorphism, degree of SSD should increase with overall body size, and in taxa with female‐biased ...

Single‐cell sequencing reveals potential novel insights into appendage‐patterning and joint‐development in a spider

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Jointed appendages represent one of the key innovations of arthropods, and thus understanding the development and evolution of these structures is important for the understanding of the evolutionary success of Arthropoda. In this paper, we analyze a cell cluster that was identified in a previous single‐cell sequencing (SCS ...

New ‘stimuli-enriched’ laboratory bioassay used to identify improved botanical repellent treatment, Lem-ocimum, to control the stored-grain pest Tribolium castaneum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A laboratory study of Tribolium castaneum, a major pest of stored grain, was conducted to develop a more efficient and effective ‘choice’ bioassay for identification of new repellent botanical treatments.

Behavioural responses of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) to different types of uninfested and infested feed

open access: yesBulletin of entomological research, 2020
Tribolium castaneum is one of the most economically important insects that damages stored products. The effects of several infested or uninfested raw feed materials (wheat bran, coarse wheat meal, corn feed flour), feed products (compound feed for pigs ...

Noncanonical Nucleotides in the Genome Around the Maternal‐Zygotic Transition

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, EarlyView.
In this paper, Kazzazi et al. provide a comprehensive review of the dynamics of nonconventional nucleotides in the genome during early developmental stages, hypothesizing a potential role for these nucleotides in the activation of the zygotic genome. ABSTRACT From the very moment of fertilization and throughout development, the cells of animal embryos ...

Inbreeding Affects on Beetle Clustering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The Red Flour Beetle (Tribolium castaneum; Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is a common pest in many grain mills (Baldwin and Fasulo 2010) and found wherever grains or other dried foods are stored (Schröder 2008).
