Behavioral Lateralization in the Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) [PDF]
We examined side preferences in the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) through observations of limb use (right and left flipper) in 123 wild and 16 captive individuals. We also analyzed archival data on wild manatees to develop an index of boat-caused body scars to determine lateralization of evasive action.

Rapidly declining seagrass meadows in Brazil: Findings from satellite imagery and local knowledge
Abstract Due to the limitations of individual monitoring approaches, integrating social perceptions with multiple advanced technologies provides a new opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem degradation. We combined historical aerial mapping, satellite imagery, semi‐structured interviews with local stakeholders, and a bilingual ...

Disparity of turbinal bones in placental mammals
Abstract Turbinals are key bony elements of the mammalian nasal cavity, involved in heat and moisture conservation as well as olfaction. While turbinals are well known in some groups, their diversity is poorly understood at the scale of placental mammals, which span 21 orders.

Censusing manatees: a report on the feasibility of using aerial surveys and mark and recapture techniques to conduct a population survey of the West Indian Manatee [PDF]
This report results from an invitation to review the needs and prospects for capture-recapture and aerial census studies of the manatee (Trichechus manatus) in Florida. Three aerial reconnaissance flights provided a first hand view of manatee habitats,

Cognition as a Conservation Tool: A Case Study of Florida Manatees and Boat Strikes
ABSTRACT Boat strikes injure and kill large numbers of Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) each year. Management actions taken to mitigate this threat can be potentially enhanced by consideration of manatee cognitive processes. The role of cognition in marine mammal conservation has received little consideration in the literature.
