Cuban Connection: Regional Role for Florida's Manatees
The status of the West Indian manatee [Trichechus manatus (Linnaeus, 1758)] remains enigmatic. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies the species as “Vulnerable” and the two subspecies [T. m. manatus (Linnaeus, 1758) and T.

ABSTRACT Habitat selection is a fundamental aspect of animal movement and behaviour, involving strategies that influence population regulation, species interactions, community structure and the generation and preservation of biodiversity. The Greater Caribbean Manatee is a megaherbivorous aquatic mammal with high environmental plasticity, found in a ...

Manatee calf call contour and acoustic structure varies by species and body size
Vocal activity and signal characteristics of mammals are driven by several factors that result in both stability and plasticity over multiple time scales.

We present an approach for estimating wildlife abundance from unstructured aerial surveys. We combine a spatial model for count data with auxiliary information on detection probability. This framework is intended to be flexible, requiring lower survey costs and less computation time than other alternatives for estimating abundance.

: The West Indian (Trichechus manatus) and Amazonian (T. inunguis) manatees have a sympatric occurrence at the mouth of the Amazon River. A result of this interspecific encounter is the occurrence of hybrids, which are frequently found along the coasts ...

Do Marine Mammals Diversify More Slowly Than Non‐Marine Mammals?
ABSTRACT Aim Species richness is generally lower in marine than in terrestrial ecosystems, but the reasons behind this disparity remain unclear. This study examines whether marine mammals diversify at a slower pace than their non‐marine counterparts, aiming to shed light on the factors explaining potential diversification differences among them ...

Multi‐Scale Habitat Selection of Greater Caribbean Manatees in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Mexico
ABSTRACT Habitat selection describes population distribution as a function of environmental features. It is a fundamental process with primordial ecological and evolutionary implications. To accurately describe habitat selection, it is important to identify temporal and spatial scales perceived by the population and use these scales when modeling ...

The visual pigments of the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus)
Manatees are unique among the fully aquatic marine mammals in that they are herbivorous creatures, with hunting strategies restricted to grazing on sea-grasses. Since the other groups of (carnivorous) marine mammals have been found to possess various visual system adaptations to their unique visual environments, it was of interest to investigate the ...
