Secondary Syphilis Presenting as Glossodynia, Plaques en Prairie Fauchée, and a Split Papule at the Oral Commissure: Case Report and Review

open access: yesCase Reports in Medicine, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
Syphilis has been coined “the great imitator” due to its extreme heterogeneity of presentation and mimicry of other conditions. Therefore, it is essential that physicians be familiar with the full spectrum of its manifestations. Syphilis may also lead to oral lesions that, occasionally, are unaccompanied by concomitant tegumentary findings.

Trends in Medicinal Uses of Edible Wild Vertebrates in Brazil

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
The use of food medicines is a widespread practice worldwide. In Brazil, such use is often associated with wild animals, mostly focusing on vertebrate species. Here we assessed taxonomic and ecological trends in traditional uses of wild edible vertebrates in the country, through an extensive ethnobiological database analysis. Our results showed that at

Non-Specific Manifestations of Helminthiasis in Children

open access: yesZdorovʹe Rebenka, 2015
The article deals with the non-specific manifestations of parasitic diseases. Clinical symptoms of these states are not only non-specific, but also have similarities with many different infectious and non-infectious diseases.

Endemic zoonoses in the tropics: a public health problem hiding in plain sight

open access: yesVeterinary Record, Volume 176, Issue 9, Page 220-225, February 2015., 2015
Zoonotic diseases are a significant burden on animal and human health, particularly in developing countries. Despite recognition of this fact, endemic zoonoses often remain undiagnosed in people, instead being mistaken for febrile diseases such as malaria.

Investigating the Dichotomous Nature of Nitric Oxide During the Enteral Phase of Trichinella spiralis Infection in Mice: An Experimental Study

open access: yesImmuno
The exact role of nitric oxide (NO) in the complex interplay between the host and Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) parasite remains uncovered. While much has been revealed about the role of the inducible isoenzyme (iNOS) in different parasitic ...

Innovative molecular diagnosis of Trichinella species based on β-carbonic anhydrase genomic sequence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Trichinellosis is a helminthic infection where different species of Trichinella nematodes are the causative agents. Several molecular assays have been designed to aid diagnostics of trichinellosis. These assays are mostly complex and expensive.

Disseminated Sarcocystis miescheriana infection in a finisher pig in Grenada

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 10, Issue 4, July 2024.
This is the first reported case of sarcocystosis due to Sarcocystis miescheriana in a pig on a farm in Grenada. The definitive and intermediate hosts for S. miescheriana are pigs and dogs, respectively. Severe infection by the parasite resulted in the condemnation of the entire carcass at meat inspection.

The Bidirectional Relationship between Sleep and Immunity against Infections

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
Sleep is considered an important modulator of the immune response. Thus, a lack of sleep can weaken immunity, increasing organism susceptibility to infection. For instance, shorter sleep durations are associated with a rise in suffering from the common cold.

Using DNA metabarcoding to separate natural and human provided food in wild boar diet at the northern distribution range of Europe

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 2024, Issue 3, May 2024.
Wild boar Sus scrofa is increasing in numbers and extending its distribution across Europe and is difficult to control due to high reproductive potential. Dietary quality is a main determinant of wild boar population dynamics, and the extent to which they rely on human‐provided food provide a key to limit their distribution.

Efficacy of Germinated Cereals as Bait Carrier for Zinc Phosphide and Bromadiolone against Field and Commensal Rodent Pests: A Laboratory Evaluation

open access: yesAdvances in Zoology, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
Both sexes of rodent pests such as Bandicota bengalensis, Millardia meltada, Mus booduga, and Rattus rattus were subjected to toxicity tests (acute rodenticide: 1.5% and 2% zinc phosphide and chronic rodenticide: bromadiolone (0.005%), under no‐choice and choice tests) by using their preferred germinated cereals, namely, paddy, pearl millet, and finger
