Protozoan Co-Infection Drives Fish Mortality Event in Crete's Karteros River. [PDF]
ABSTRACT In August 2024, a significant fish kill involving hundreds of flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) was reported in the delta region of the Karteros River, Crete, Greece. The investigation identified the primary cause of mortality as severe parasitic infections, specifically from the protozoan parasites Amyloodinium ocellatum and Trichodina sp.

The First Report of Cod Gill Poxvirus in Gills of Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua L.) Suffering From Cardiorespiratory Disease. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Atlantic cod farming experiences renewed growth in Norway, and increased awareness is essential to address emerging diseases in this species. There are few reports on gill diseases in cod, and to date, no viral gill infections of cod have been documented. In this study, we collected samples from three sequential time points in summer 2023 from

Unclear host taxonomy hinders parasite studies: An up-to-date checklist of the protozoan and metazoan parasites of Phoxinus minnows (Teleostei: Leuciscidae). [PDF]
Abstract Phoxinus minnows are small freshwater fish found throughout Eurasia. The taxonomy of this genus is still under investigation, and new species are regularly described. They are frequently introduced outside their native range due to their use as live bait for angling, and such fish introductions can have diverse impacts on the recipient areas ...

Bacterial Communities From Two Freshwater Aquaculture Systems in Northern Germany. [PDF]
Freshwater aquaculture in open systems utilises water from a natural source, which limits the control of water conditions. Water microbiome description could indicate water quality changes and be used for improving the farm management. Water microbiome composition did not change significantly between inflow and outflow water, although heterotrophic ...

Distribution and Risk Factors Associated With Tilapia Parvovirus (TiPV) Presence in Red Hybrid Tilapia (<i>Oreochromis</i> spp.) Farms in Thailand. [PDF]
Emerging viral diseases, such as tilapia parvovirus (TiPV), are having a significant economic impact on global tilapia aquaculture. TiPV is responsible for the mass mortality of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and red hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) in China, India and Thailand.

Morphology and Molecular Phylogeny of Endosymbiotic Ciliates (Peritrichia, Mobilida) of Marine Invertebrates with Descriptions of Two Novel Species Urceolaria clepsydra n. sp. and Urceolaria bratalia n. sp. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Mobilid ciliates are a morphologically distinct group of protists that form a wide range of symbiotic relationships with aquatic animals and includes three subgroups: Trichodinidae, Urceolariidae, and Polycyclidae. Trichodinids are best known for infecting fishes, whereas urceolariids infect diverse marine invertebrates.

Hidden gems: Scattered knowledge hampered freshwater jellyfish research over the past one-and-a-half centuries. [PDF]
Approximately 150 years of research on freshwater jellyfish globally have resulted in a considerable amount of information. However, this is not comprehensively available to most researchers worldwide. Scattered information allows only for a fragmented view of the research field, which mediated by climate change received increasing importance.

Observations on Tripartiella bursiformis, Trichodina nigra and a Pathogenic Trichodinid, Trichodina fultoni [PDF]
A series of epizootics caused by Trichodina fultoni is reported. Fish kept in running water at 12°c showed severe signs of trichodiniasis. At 12 °C T. fultoni lacked strict host specificity, but demonstrated some preference. A redescription of Tripartiella burstjormis, using the silver impregnated techniques, is given.

Reevaluation of the phylogenetic relationship between Mobilid and Sessilid peritrichs (Ciliophora, Oligohymenophorea) based on small subunit rRNA genes sequences [PDF]
Based on morphological characters, peritrich ciliates (Class Olygohymenophorea, Subclass Peritrichia) have been subdivided into the Orders Sessilida and Mobilida.
