Host specificity of trichodinid ectoparasites of freshwater fish

Parasitology Today, 1987
Ciliophorons of the family Trichodinidoe comprise seven genera, all of which are commensolists or parasites - mainly on aquatic hosts such as other ciliophorans, coelenterates, planctonic crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms, amphibians and fish. Although the first species of this family, Trichodina pediculus, was described from material collected from ...

Morphology, molecular phylogeny, and taxonomy of trichodinids (Ciliophora, Mobilida) from Calanoid copepods

Parasitology Research, 2020
Trichodinid ciliates were isolated from calanoid copepods and were characterized by morphological and molecular techniques. The trichodinids found in this study were morphologically similar to Trichodina acuta, but morphometric differences were observed between our specimens and T. acuta. The T.

Trichodinids (Ciliophora: Trichodinidae) on Rocky-Tidal Fishes from the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico

Journal of Parasitology, 2020
Information regarding trichodinid ectoparasites on marine fishes of North America is relatively scarce. In this study, 5 ciliate species from the family Trichodinidae were found associated with 8 fish hosts from the rocky intertidal zone of the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula (BCP), Mexico. All of the host-parasite relationships recorded

Two methods for geometric morphometric analysis of trichodinids from killifishes

Parasitology Research
In this study, we compared the efficacy of geometric morphometric techniques, including outlines and landmark-based approaches, to support the differentiation of Trichodina bellottii from three co-occurring killifish species. Both methods were able to differentiate trichodinids from different host species.

High prevalence and mean intensity of trichodinids and monogeneans on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Indonesian hatcheries

Veterinary Parasitology: Regional Studies and Reports, 2023
This study describes recent infestations of ectoparasites on tilapia fingerlings in several hatcheries. High mortality of fingerlings and juvenile fish often occurs in hatcheries but the causative agents remain unclear. Nile tilapia fingerlings were obtained from three hatcheries in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Trichodinids and monogeneans infestation among Nile tilapia hatcheries in Egypt: prevalence, therapeutic and prophylactic treatments

Aquaculture International, 2020
The current study aimed to investigate the most prevalent ectoparasites among some Egyptian tilapia hatcheries and find out the appropriate therapeutic and prophylactic doses. For that, 500 Nile tilapia fry weighing 0.02 g were collected from several hatcheries at Sharkia Governorate, Egypt, over the period of April to September 2017, examined for the ...

Trichodinid (Ciliophora: Trichodinidae) Infections in Perch (Perca fluviatilis) Experimentally Exposed to Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents

Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2011
Wild-caught European perch (Perca fluviatilis) were exposed in the laboratory to untreated bleached pulp and paper mill effluent in two separate experiments. The first experiment was conducted at 7-8°C using effluent concentrations of 5 and 10%, and the second experiment was conducted at ambient river temperature of 4-20°C using an effluent ...

Trichodinid ectoparasites (Ciliophora: Peritrichida) of wild and cultured freshwater fishes in Taiwan, with notes on their origin

Systematic Parasitology, 1994
During 1988 parasitological surveys were carried out on the freshwater fish fauna on the island of Taiwan in 12 localities that included fishery stations, reservoirs, fish markets as well as natural rivers and swamps. A total of 28 fish species were examined, representing 14 families.
