First report of Trichodinella and new geographical records of trichodinids in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) farmed in Brazil

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária
Massive occurrence of trichodinids is frequently accompanied by serious disease in fish farms. In this study, trichodinid species from the gills and skin of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) farmed in the central-western region of Brazil (state of ...

Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) Cage Aquaculture in Africa: Potential Threats to Congeneric Fish Species and Advances to Detect Escapes

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 5, Issue 4, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Cage fish farming, a recent development in aquaculture, has enhanced fisheries production due to its higher stocking densities than traditional pond and open‐water systems. Although it can enhance production, the system can pose biodiversity threats when there is an unintentional or intentional release of stocked fish into the wild.

Flatfish lesion detection based on part segmentation approach and lesion image generation

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 56, Issue 3, June 2025.
Abstract The flatfish is a major farmed species consumed globally in large quantities. However, due to the densely populated farming environment, flatfish are susceptible to lesions and diseases, making early lesion detection crucial. Traditionally, lesions were detected through visual inspection, but observing large numbers of fish is challenging ...

Morphology and Molecular Phylogeny of Endosymbiotic Ciliates (Peritrichia, Mobilida) of Marine Invertebrates with Descriptions of Two Novel Species Urceolaria clepsydra n. sp. and Urceolaria bratalia n. sp.

open access: yesJournal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, Volume 72, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
ABSTRACT Mobilid ciliates are a morphologically distinct group of protists that form a wide range of symbiotic relationships with aquatic animals and includes three subgroups: Trichodinidae, Urceolariidae, and Polycyclidae. Trichodinids are best known for infecting fishes, whereas urceolariids infect diverse marine invertebrates.

Observations on Tripartiella bursiformis, Trichodina nigra and a Pathogenic Trichodinid, Trichodina fultoni [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Wildlife Disease Association, 1967
A series of epizootics caused by Trichodina fultoni is reported. Fish kept in running water at 12°c showed severe signs of trichodiniasis. At 12 °C T. fultoni lacked strict host specificity, but demonstrated some preference. A redescription of Tripartiella burstjormis, using the silver impregnated techniques, is given.
