Direct and indirect effects of elevated CO2, warming and drought on plant–consumer interactions of Plantago lanceolata

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 8, August 2026.
Experimental treatments of warming, elevated CO2, drought and their interactions had direct and indirect (plant‐trait‐mediated) effects on field Plantago lanceolata consumption and feeding preferences of the locust Locusta migratoria. The effects largely differed between consumption types, despite being studied on the same species in the same system ...

The predatory behavior of ants: an impressive panoply of morphological adaptations

open access: yesInsect Science, Volume 33, Issue 4, Page 1256-1284, August 2026.
This review focuses on predation in ants, showing the wide diversity of cases from solitary foraging to group hunting tactics, as well as the evolution of mandible shape frequently adapted to capture specific prey. Although most ants are generalist feeders, finding their sugary substances directly on plants or indirectly via sap‐sucking insects, some ...

Robust estimation of key leaf traits from reflectance spectroscopy of herbarium specimens

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 8, Page 2364-2378, August 2026.
Abstract Community‐wide efforts to digitize herbarium specimens have facilitated novel uses of specimen data across scales. However, the need for destructive sampling has prevented large‐scale examination of foliar functional traits. We demonstrate that nondestructive reflectance spectra are an effective tool for estimating leaf traits from herbarium ...

Six New Species of the Myrmecophile Spider Beetle Diplocotes Westwood, 1869 (Coleoptera: Ptinidae) From Australia

open access: yesAustral Entomology, Volume 65, Issue 3, August 2026.
ABSTRACT The study of myrmecophilous spider beetles of Australia has led to the discovery of six new species of Diplocotes, Westwood, 1869, described herein. Three species—Diplocotes meentheenaensis sp. nov., Diplocotes septenantennalis sp. nov. and Diplocotes pilbaraensis sp. nov.—are recorded from the Pilbara region of northwestern Australia.

Competitive Interactions Between Generalist Predators and Their Effects on Shared and Non‐Shared Pests in a Greenhouse Crop

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 8, Page 831-841, August 2026.
Orius laevigatus engages in unidirectional intraguild predation on Transeius montdorensis. Despite this, both predators coexisted and suppressed the shared thrips prey. Aphids, a non‐shared prey, were effectively controlled by O. laevigatus even when its population was limited due to intraguild predation. T.
