Tinea Pedis Caused by Trichophyton violaceum

This, to authors' knowledge, is the first report in the United States of Tinea pedis caused by Trichophyton violaceum in a recent Southeast Asian immigrant. Because of the recent entry into this country of refugees from an area of the world where T. violaceum is endemic, this anthropophilic dermatophyte may become a significant cause of dermatophytosis

TRICHOPHYTON VIOLACEUM INFECTION IN AN INDIAN SCHOOL

ABSTRACT: Trichophyton violaceum infection was found in 26% of 69 children attending a public boarding school. The possible source of infection may have been the adult women from the gypsy community discussed. Treatment with systemic griseofulvin and external sulphur salicylic ointment eliminated the infection in all affected individuals.

Freeze-etching observations of trichophyton violaceum

Trichophyton violaceum was cultured on a Sabouraud's dextrose agar slants for freeze-fracture replication. It was cryoprotected with glycerol and sucrose. The surface structure of the cell wall showed a rodlet pattern. Invagination-like craters were observed in the plasmalemma.

Trichophyton violaceum infection of the scalp in Poona (India)

A report of thirty-four cases of ringworm of the scalp caused byT. violaceum studied at Sassoon Hospitals, Poona, India, is presented. The infections were found to be more common in children of the ages between 5 to 15 during the months of February to June. Majority of the affected individuals were undernourished.

Chronic generalized trichophytosis in a 44-year-old female is reported. The disease began when she was 15 and gradually spread from the scalp. Surviving hairs on the scalp and eyebrows showed an endothrix invasion. Enlargement and fistulization of the cervical and axillary lymph nodes were also present.

Parvalbumins play crucial physiological roles in neuromuscular systems of vertebrates, such as cell-cycle, development of neurons, contraction of muscles, and regulation of intracellular calcium. To perform these neuromuscular functions, parvalbumin may be in associated with other proteins including calbindin, carbonic anhydrase, and cytochrome oxidase.
