Punchline with(out) purpose: Integrating research on instructional humour and seductive details

open access: yesBritish Journal of Educational Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction We integrated research on instructional humour and seductive details to investigate when affiliative course‐related humour is effective or rather ineffective for learning. We assumed that instructional humour without a cognitive function (irrelevant humour) would have detrimental effects on learning performance resembling the ...

Correlated Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) and Radar Observations of the Initial Stages of Florida Triggered Lightning Discharges [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We characterize the geometrical and electrical characteristics of the initial stages of nine Florida triggered lightning discharges using a Lightning Mapping Array (LMA), a C-band SMART radar, and measured channel-base currents.

Delivery of nano‐formulated drugs to solid tumours is selectively increased by co‐application of the vascular disrupting agent CA4P

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Background and purpose Nano‐formulated chemotherapeutics prolong systemic availability of drugs and can reduce systemic toxicity, but their accumulation in solid tumours is often limited and unpredictable. Broadly applicable strategies to selectively enhance tumour delivery are lacking.

Discussions on a long gap discharge to an EHV transmission tower by a rocket triggered lightning experiment [PDF]

open access: yes
The triggered lightning experiments using a rocket have been carried out on a winter mountain in Japan since 1986. For the four years from 1986 to 1989, 39 rockets were launched and 19 of them triggered lightning strikes.

Quality Regulation and Unexpected Gaming: Evidence From Mandating Flight Delay Compensation

open access: yesJournal of Economics &Management Strategy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Policies that target a single aspect of agents' motivation may lead to their diminished efforts in other areas. This paper examines the effect of the European Union's flight delay compensation policy on flight on‐time performance by exploiting a unique policy variation in a difference‐in‐differences framework.

Natural disaster risk salience and the strategic appointment of directors with sustainability expertise

open access: yesJournal of Financial Research, EarlyView.
Abstract This article examines how salient sustainability risks from near‐miss natural disasters influence board composition. Using a difference‐in‐differences design, I find that firms located in counties neighboring disaster‐affected areas significantly increase the presence of directors with sustainability expertise following the disaster.

Dust cloud lightning in extraterrestrial atmospheres [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Lightning is present in all solar system planets which form clouds in their atmospheres. Cloud formation outside our solar system is possible in objects with much higher temperatures than on Earth or on Jupiter: Brown dwarfs and giant extrasolar gas ...

Bank Competition Amid Digital Disruption: Implications for Financial Inclusion

open access: yesThe Journal of Finance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We examine how digital disruption affects bank competition using the staggered rollout of 3G mobile networks. 3G expansion increased mobile banking adoption among tech‐savvy households, reducing branch networks—especially in younger counties.

Upward negative leaders in positive triggered lightning: Stepping and branching in the initial stage

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2017
By conducting comprehensive observation on the rarely triggered positive lightning flashes, two cases of upward negative leaders were quantitatively investigated with simultaneous data of current, optical, and electromagnetic field changes at fine time ...

Experimental Evidence of Giant Electron - Gamma Bursts Generated by Extensive Atmospheric Showers in Thunderclouds

open access: yes, 2004
The existence of a new phenomena - giant electron-gamma bursts is established. The bursts are generated in thunderclouds as a result of the combined action of runaway breakdown and extensive atmosphere showers (RB-EAS).
