A Pilot Clinical Study to Investigate the Human Whole Blood Spectrum Characteristics in the Sub-THz Region [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We have conducted a pilot clinical study to not only investigate the THz spectra of ex-vivo fresh human whole blood of 28 patients following 8-hours fasting guideline, but also to find out the critical blood ingredients of which the concentration dominantly affects those THz spectra.

Genetic determinants of plasma triglycerides

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2011
Plasma triglyceride (TG) concentration is reemerging as an important cardiovascular disease risk factor. More complete understanding of the genes and variants that modulate plasma TG should enable development of markers for risk prediction, diagnosis ...

Conching chocolate: A prototypical transition from frictionally jammed solid to flowable suspension with maximal solid content [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The mixing of a powder of 10-50{\mu}m primary particles into a liquid to form a dispersion with the highest possible solid content is a common industrial operation. Building on recent advances in the rheology of such 'granular dispersions', we study a paradigmatic example of such powder incorporation: the conching of chocolate, in which a homogeneous ...

Remnant Lipoprotein Cholesterol and Incident Coronary Heart Disease: The Jackson Heart and Framingham Offspring Cohort Studies

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2016
BackgroundRemnant lipoproteins (RLPs), the triglyceride‐enriched precursors to low‐density lipoprotein, are an emerging risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD).

Integrated systems approach identifies pathways from the genome to triglycerides through a metabolomic causal network [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Introduction: To leverage functionality and clinical relevance into understanding systems biology, one needs to understand the pathway of the genetic effects on risk factors/disease through intermediate molecular levels, such as metabolomics. Systems approaches integrate multi-omic information to find pathways to disease endpoints and make optimal ...

Isolation and characterization of four lipolytic preparations from rat skeletal muscle

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1968
Four different lipolytic preparations have been isolated from rat skeletal muscle. Two of these, provisionally designated monopalmitin lipase (MPL) and monomyristin lipase (MML), are associated with insoluble cellular particulate fractions. The other two

Effects of ethanol on the metabolism of free fatty acids in isolated liver cells

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1973
Ethanol inhibited the oxidation and enhanced the esterification of albumin-bound [1-14C]palmitate incubated with isolated rat liver cells. Ethanol decreased the conversion of [1-14C]palmitate to 14CO2 and 14C-labeled ketone bodies and enhanced the ...

BEEF TALLOW AND EMULSIFIER IN GROWING-FINISHING PIG DIETS

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências
Two trials were aimed to evaluate beef tallow in diets with and without emulsifier on performance of pigs at growing-finishing phases. In the first trial, 15 barrows (22.03±0.62 kg) were distributed among three treatments: reference diet; test diet 1 (5%

Increased concentrations of circulating vitamin E in carriers of the apolipoprotein A5 gene −1131T>C variant and associations with plasma lipids and lipid peroxidation

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2007
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the apolipoprotein A5 (APOA5) 1131T>C gene variant on vitamin E status and lipid profile. The gene variant was determined in 297 healthy nonsmoking men aged 20–75 years and recruited in the VITAGE ...

Observation of Cholesterol Dissolved in Microscopic Deposits of Free Fatty Acids in the Lumen of an Aorta of a Mouse Model for Human Atherosclerosis [PDF]

open access: yesSPIE 7 5321A-11 (2004), 2008
The Raman spectrum of microscopic droplets of lipid material on the lumen of the aorta of an apolipoprotein E knock-out mouse were reported in the proceedings of an SPIE conference. Based on the absence of the carbonyl band in the spectrum, at that time it was determined that the spectrum represents free fatty acids rather than triglycerides.
