Applications of Triploids in Agriculture

2015
Triploid hybrids have one of the most important traits, seedlessness, which is the characteristic for the fresh-fruit market. Triploid embryos are found in small seeds that do not germinate. Hybridization-based extensive breeding programmes require very efficient methodologies for embryo rescue and evaluation of ploidy.

The enigma of triploid potatoes

Euphytica, 1966
Triploids are comparatively difficult to produce in tuberous Solanums as is the case in many other genera. Amongst the wild species triploids are infrequent whereas in the cultivars the opposite is true. It is argued that their survival and increase under cultivation means that they possess certain selective advantages as cultivars, advantages often ...

Improved estimation of the proportion of triploids in populations with diploid and triploid individuals.

The Journal of heredity, 2000
We consider the estimation of the proportion of triploids in populations of plants or animals in which diploid and triploid individuals coexist, using data from electrophoretic analysis of isozyme or microsatellite markers. Individuals that have three distinct alleles at a locus are unambiguously triploid.
