The Usefulness of Scientific Field Trips: What are High School Students’ Attitudes towards Them? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The purpose of this study is to analyze students’ attitudes toward scientific field trips. This study will evaluate whether students have a positive, negative, or neutral attitude toward going on these scientific field trips.

Current‐Driven Nonreciprocal Response of Nonequilibrium Skyrmions

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A skyrmion holds great promise for spintronic applications owing to its intrinsic topological stability and high mobility under ultra‐low current excitation. Here, by means of in situ electron microscopy, we demonstrate a skyrmion diode effect and the associated current‐driven nonreciprocal skyrmion dynamics in a designed FeGe‐based microdevice.

Neighborhood Crime and Travel Behavior: An Investigation of the Influence of Neighborhood Crime Rates on Mode Choice – Phase II, MTI Report 11-04 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
There are considerable environmental and public health benefits if people choose to walk, bicycle, or ride transit, instead of drive. However, little work has been done on the effects of neighborhood crimes on mode choice.

Wind field and sex constrain the flight speeds of central-place foraging albatrosses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
By extracting energy from the highly dynamic wind and wave fields that typify pelagic habitats, albatrosses are able to proceed almost exclusively by gliding flight.

Discovering Interpretable Semantics from Radio Signals for Contactless Cardiac Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a semantic representation framework for clinically interpretable cardiac monitoring from contactless radio signals. It formulates radio semantic learning as an information‐bottleneck problem and approximates the objective via intra‐modal compression and cross‐modal alignment, structuring radio measurements into meaningful semantic ...

MGDP: Mastering a Generalized Depth Perception Model for Quadruped Locomotion

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Perception‐based Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) controllers demonstrate impressive performance on challenging terrains. However, existing controllers still face core limitations, struggling to achieve both terrain generality and platform transferability, and are constrained by high computational overhead and sensitivity to sensor noise.

Nernstian Diagnostics of Imperfect Selectivity in Naphthalene Diimide‐Based Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Battery

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Non‐ideal redox electrolytes still govern the Nernstian behavior of electrode potentials in aqueous organic redox flow batteries under operation. We utilized this effect to analytically predict two scenarios of battery performance degradation. ABSTRACT Aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) enhance the sustainability of battery energy storage ...
