Selective predation, parasitism, and trophic cascades in a bluegill–Daphnia–parasite system

Oecologia, 2007
As disease incidence increases worldwide, there is increased interest in determining the factors controlling parasitism in natural populations. Recently, several studies have suggested a possible role of predation in reducing parasitism, but this idea has received little experimental attention.

Acorn selection by Mexican jays: a test of a tri-trophic symbiotic relationship hypothesis

Oecologia, 1997
By caching acorns, jays serve as important dispersal agents for oak (Quercus) species. Yet little is known about which acorn characteristics affect selection by jays. In the traditional model of jay/oak symbiosis, large, brown, ripe acorns free of invertebrate parasites (e.g., Curculio acorn weevils) are selected by jays.

MODEL SELECTION FOR A SUBTERRANEAN TROPHIC CASCADE: ROOT-FEEDING CATERPILLARS AND ENTOMOPATHOGENIC NEMATODES

Ecology, 1999
Conjecture abounds while evidence is limited concerning indirect protection afforded plants by carnivorous predators in terrestrial ecosystems, apropos of the Hairston-Smith-Slobodkin (HSS) hypothesis. We conducted a field experiment with a suspected trophic cascade.

Trophic index (TRIX) at selected stations of Central and South Adriatic

2017
As one of the indicators related to the marine ecosystem condition in the National list of indicators, trophic index (TRIX) is included [1]. The TRIX index is a logarithmic formula of four state variables, which are directly related to productivity: chlorophyll-a (Chl, mg/L), oxygen as the absolute percentage deviation from oxygen saturation (DO ...

Specific Trophic Factor ‐ Receptor Interactions: Key Selective Elements in Brain Development and “Regeneration”

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 1988
An hypothesis is presented which emphasizes the key role of specific trophic factor-receptor interactions in the development of the brain. We postulate that very early in development neurons become dependent on external factors (mainly neuropeptides) for guidance and survival. These requirements are the key to the selection process which results in the
