Applications and limitations of TSIs are discussed, and types of TSIs developed previously are reviewed. An index is a summary statistic, and most trophic indices have been multivariate metrics, reflecting the complexity of the concept of trophic state.

Trophic state of the northern Adriatic
2013The annual mean trophic index and efficiency coefficient were used to address the trophic state of the northern Adriatic in the last forty years.
