The Uptake and Metabolism of Cysteine by Giardia lamblia Trophozoites
Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, 1994ABSTRACT. The cysteine, cystine, methionine and sulfate uptake and cysteine metabolism of Giardia lamblia was studied. Initial experiments indicated that bathocuproine sulphonate (20 μM) added to Keister's modified TYI‐S‐33 medium supported the growth of G. lamblia at low L‐cysteine concentration.

Oral Infection of Mice with Trophozoites of Giardia muris
The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1977Giardia muris has been maintained for years in the mouse by administering by gavage 10,000 trophozoites taken from the small intestine of infected mice. Despite the growth of numerous protozoa in the intestine, absorption of tetracycline hydrochloride in infected mice was not changed to a statistically significant extent, as blood drug levels increased

Menadione kills trophozoites and cysts of Giardia intestinalis
Microbiology, 2004Production of reactive oxygen species by redox cycling in the presence of low levels of oxygen has been studied as a possible approach to anti-protozoal chemotherapeutic strategy. Incubation of the diplomonad flagellateGiardia intestinaliswith 2-methy-1,4-naphthoquinone (menadione), under anaerobic conditions, gave UV absorption changes characteristic ...

Characteristics of thymidine transport in Giardia intestinalis trophozoites
Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 1991The transport of thymidine by the protozoan parasite Giardia intestinalis was examined at 0 degrees C. This temperature prevented attachment of the cells to vessel walls, so that a rapid sampling technique could be used. Thymidine influx (distinguished from gross uptake) was readily measurable at 0 degrees C and was specific and saturable.

The purpose of this article is to describe a case in which there is presumptive evidence of self-inoculation with Endamoeba histolytica through contaminated vaseline, and to report an experiment bearing on the longevity of E. histolytica in vaseline at room temperature. Mr. S. P.

Axenic Isolation of Viable Giardia muris Trophozoites
The Journal of Parasitology, 1991Large numbers of viable Giardia muris trophozoites were isolated from the duodenum of experimentally infected mice 6 days after inoculation with 1,000 G. muris cysts. A series of shaking, incubation, and washing steps in the presence of the broad-spectrum antibiotic piperacillin readily provided 4.9 +/- 1.5 x 10(5) G. muris trophozoites per mouse, free

The course of giardiavirus infection in the Giardia lamblia trophozoites
Experimental Parasitology, 1991The subcellular distribution of Giardia lamblia virus RNA in infected G. lamblia trophozoites was examined by in situ hybridization using biotinylated DNA probe and riboprobe. In G. lamblia Portland I strain, which is chronically infected by G. lamblia viruses, the viral RNA was detected in the cytoplasm as well as in the twin nuclei.

Oxygen Uptake In Cysts and Trophozoites of Giardia Lamblia
Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, 1993ABSTRACT. Oxygen uptake in cysts and trophozoites of the parasitic protozoan Giardia lamblia was examined. Both showed oxygen uptake activity, but that of cysts was only 10% to 20% that of trophozoites. Oxygen dependence of oxygen uptake in cysts and trophozoites showed oxygen maxima above which oxygen uptake decreased.

In Vitro Cultivation of Giardia Trophozoites
1984For more than half a century, methods and media have been available that enable the in vitro cultivation of most human intestinal protozoan parasites, including Entamoeba histolytica, other amoeba, Balantidium coli, and most of the alimentary flagellates (Dobell and Laidlaw, 1926).
