Bridging the translational gap in clinical nanomedicine: From rational design to clinical reality

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Nanotechnology offers a multi‐faceted approach to modern healthcare, encompassing high‐sensitivity diagnostic imaging, innovative vaccine delivery, and targeted therapeutics. This review explores how these nanomedicine applications address critical challenges in cancer recurrence and the treatment of neurologic and respiratory diseases to combat rising

Effect of drying process on marupá wood color

open access: yesMaderas: Ciencia y Tecnología, 2014
This research was developed after consultations with tropical timber exporters, who were facing problems with the colors of the species under study. This work aimed at characterizing Simarouba amara tropical wood color and verifying possible differences ...

Ant Diversity of the Xisha Islands: Community Structure, Exotic Species Colonization, and Ecological Functions in a Tropical Coral Archipelago

open access: yesBiological Diversity, EarlyView.
The first inventory of ants from the Xisha Islands of the South China Sea was compiled, revealing 21 species: 70% native and 30% exotic. Anthropogenic disturbance primarily drove exotic colonization, whereas island area showed weak positive effects on species richness. Most ants were omnivorous, with key mutualistic and seed‐dispersal roles.

The potential of using xylarium wood samples for wood density calculations: a comparison of approaches for volume measurement

open access: yesiForest - Biogeosciences and Forestry, 2011
Wood specific gravity (WSG) is an important biometric variable for aboveground biomass calculations in tropical forests. Sampling a sufficient number of trees in remote tropical forests to represent the species and size distribution of a forest to ...

What drives animal responses to high severity fire? The role of functional traits

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Fire regimes are changing worldwide, with increases in the frequency, extent, and severity of fires posing growing risks to biodiversity. Fire severity – the degree of habitat alteration following fire – strongly influences both immediate survival and long‐term recovery of fauna.

Evidence for adaptive explanations of semelparity in animals

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Semelparity, the reproductive strategy of reproducing once, is widespread but uncommon in animals. Classes of models to explain the evolution of semelparity are based either on age structure and mortality schedules – demographic models in which high post‐reproductive mortality risk favours high reproductive effort and semelparity results from ...

Variation in wood density across South American tropical forests

open access: yesNature Communications
Wood density is a critical control on tree biomass, so poor understanding of its spatial variation can lead to large and systematic errors in forest biomass estimates and carbon maps.

Water contents of wood tropical deciduous forest species during the dry season

open access: yesBotan‪ical Sciences, 1988
The maximum water content, the relative water content and the water depletion of wood were studied in 41 species of a tropical deciduous forest during the dry season.

Land birds on atolls: diversity, origin, and function

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Oceanic islands are global hotspots of avian biodiversity and endemism. Their isolation and distinct environmental conditions have uniquely shaped the evolutionary trajectories of island birds, while, in turn, land bird communities have become critical providers of ecological functions to island ecosystems.

Hot and cold deserts as eco‐evolutionary arenas for understanding plant resistance to multiple abiotic stressors

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT During their long evolutionary history, land plants have evolved a range of adaptations to different abiotic stressors. These help explain present‐day diversity and distribution patterns, as well as the potential resilience of natural and agricultural systems to a changing climate. Most previous research has focused on adaptation to individual
