Haematological and Biochemical Reference Intervals Towards a Proactive Health Monitoring Approach in Norwegian Atlantic Salmon Farming

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Haematological and plasma parameters are used in veterinary medicine as a diagnostic tool, allowing for the early detection of potential health and welfare issues. For the implementation of monitoring strategies, reference intervals (RIs) are needed to know when deviations in those parameters become clinically relevant.

First Report of ‘Soft Flesh’ Induced by the Parasite Kudoa thyrsites (Myxosporea) in Commercial Codfish From Norway

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 48, Issue 4, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Kudoa thyrsites is a myxosporean parasite that infects the skeletal muscle of various teleost fish species globally. Severe infections lead to ‘soft flesh’ in fish fillets, resulting in food spoilage and subsequent discard. While K. thyrsites has previously been identified in migratory Atlantic mackerel in the northern Northeast Atlantic Ocean,

Clinical Presentation and Pathological Effects of a Hydrozoan Bloom on Farmed Atlantic Salmon

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Largely unpredictable, gelatinous plankton blooms are a growing concern for the ever‐expanding mariculture industry. Recently, a bloom of a colonial hydrozoan known as Apolemia sp. was detected via a citizen‐science initiative, Nye.dugnadforhavet.no, in mid‐Norway in July 2023.
