A fail-operational truck platooning architecture

2017 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV), 2017
Truck platooning for which multiple trucks follow at a short distance is considered a near-term truck automation opportunity, with the potential to reduce fuel consumption. Short following distances and increasing automation make it hard for a driver to be the backup if the system fails.

Multidisciplinary Investigation of Truck Platooning

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2020
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">In the age of environmental challenges, and with it the demand for increasing energy efficiency of commercial vehicles, truck platooning is discussed as a promising approach. The idea is several trucks forming an automated convoy - with the lead truck sending out acceleration ...

Evaluation of safety indicators for truck platooning

2017 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV), 2017
This paper addresses safety indicators for truck platooning at short inter-vehicle distances (with a time gap of 0.5 s). The aim of a safety indicator is to determine the correct moment for initiating a Collision Avoidance brake action to prevent a collision with the preceding truck in threatening situations. Three safety indicators are selected for an

An automated truck platoon for energy saving

2011 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2011
This paper presents an automated truck platoon that has been developed under a national ITS project named “Energy ITS.” The project, started in 2008, aims at energy saving and global warming prevention with ITS technologies. A platoon of 3 fully-automated trucks currently drives at 80 km/h with the gap of 10 m on a test truck and along an expressway ...

Itinerary Planning for Cooperative Truck Platooning

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2019
Abstract A cooperative truck platoon is a set of virtually linked trucks driving with a small intra-vehicle headway enabled by connected and automated vehicle technologies. One of the primary benefits of truck platooning is energy savings due to the reduction of aerodynamic drag on the platooned vehicles.

Electronically Coupled Truck Platoons on German Highways

2009 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, 2009
In this paper, a brief introduction of Automated Truck Platoons on Motorways is given. It includes a description, of the scenario “platoons organized by the driver”, the system architecture of the platoon system and a description of the Software architecture for a driver information system. The results of the accomplished system and acceptance tests of

Optical Truck Tracking for Autonomous Platooning

2015
Platooning applications require precise knowledge about position and orientation pose of the leading vehicle. We present an optical solution for a robust pose estimation using artificial markers and a camera as the only sensor. Temporal coherence of image sequences is used in a Kalman filter to obtain precise estimates.

Truck platooning in mixed traffic

Proceedings of the Intelligent Vehicles '95. Symposium, 2002
In this paper, an evolutionary concept for platooning of trucks is presented, which requires no additional infrastructure and can operate in today's traffic conditions. The basic idea is that a manually driven truck is followed by one or more autonomously guided trucks.

Full platoon control in Truck Platooning: A Meaningful Human Control perspective

2018 21st International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC), 2018
Truck platooning is a form of vehicle automation and cooperation that is leading the way for cooperative and automated vehicle implementation. However, much is still unknown about the effects and potential dangers of many situations in regard to cooperative control of these platoons.
