True Triaxial Stresses and the Brittle Fracture of Rock
Pure and Applied Geophysics, 2006This paper reviews the efforts made in the last 100 years to characterize the effect of the intermediate principal stress σ2 on brittle fracture of rocks, and on their strength criteria. The most common theories of failure in geomechanics, such as those of Coulomb, and Mohr, disregard σ2 and are typically based on triaxial testing of cylindrical rock ...

Behavior of EPS geofoam in true triaxial compression tests
Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 2008Abstract This paper investigates the behavior of EPS geofoam in a true triaxial apparatus using 70 mm×70 mm×140 mm prismatic brick-shaped specimens. The specimens are subjected to different stress paths in the deviator ( π ) plane by means of stress-controlled loading, in which the axial stress is imposed at a rate of 75 kPa/min in the major ...

A True Triaxial Cell for Soil and Rock
1988The design and performance of a membrane-piston, high-pressure (σ2 − σ3 ≦ 300 MN/m2) cell are presented. This device is similar to the one used for standard triaxial tests differing only in the stresses, σ2 and σ3, which are independently applied through flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fluid cushions on prismatic specimens.

Development of a True Triaxial Testing Facility for Composite Materials
2000An electromechanical testing facility capable of applying any combination of tensile and/or compressive forces to three mutually orthogonal axes of a thickness-tapered composite cruciform specimen was designed, fabricated, assembled, and evaluated. Any stress ratio in biaxial (σ1 - σ2) or triaxial (σ1 - σ2 - σ3) stress space can be explored using this ...

Behaviour of carbonated rocks under true triaxial compression
2011A true triaxial testing device has been developed in the nineties in the mining department of the Faculty of Engineering, Mons-Belgium. Since then data have been gathered from several rocks, among which various carbonated rocks exhibiting different mechanical behaviours.

Failure of Castlegate Sandstone Under True Triaxial Loading
2011A test series designed to investigate and quantify the effect of the intermediate principal stress on the failure of Castlegate sandstone was completed. Using parallelepiped specimens and a true triaxial testing system, constant mean stress tests were conducted. Stress states ranged from axisymmetric compression to axisymmetric extension.
