A small-scale and a large-scale true triaxial apparatuses (where σ1≠σ2≠σ3) were recently developed at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, Japan and are described in this paper. In these apparatuses, a comprehensive loading system that can control both strain rate and stress rate is used for the vertical (axial) direction.

A True Triaxial Testing Cell

Results of both drained and undrained triaxial tests performed with a true triaxial cell on both natural and artificial clays are presented and discussed. The true triaxial apparatus, which has been used for about 20 years, is fully described. The apparatus has recently been modified to improve the measurement of lateral deformations.
