Deformability characteristics of a rock mass under true-triaxial stress compression

Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 2006
In this paper an experimental study was planned on rock mass model with three joint sets under triaxial and true-triaxial stress states to assess the influence of joint geometry and stress ratios on deformational behaviour of rock mass. The physical models were composed of three continuous orthogonal joint sets in which joint set-I was inclined at ...

A True Triaxial Stress Cell to simulate deep downhole drilling conditions

The APPEA Journal, 2010
Conventional rock mechanics experiments using triaxial cells trying to simulate the true downhole stress field by applying equal horizontal stresses, fundamentally fail to treat real field borehole conditions as three independent stresses. In the real world, the horizontal stress field at shallow depth can have a different direction from that at ...

Hysteresis, True-Triaxial Stress-Path and Pore Pressure Effects on Permeability

SPE/ISRM Rock Mechanics in Petroleum Engineering, 1998
Abstract All producing hydrocarbon reservoirs are subject to the earth's stress anisotropy and to any regional tectonic movements. In addition, the production of fluids from a reservoir formation reduces its pore pressure such that there is an increase in its effective stresses, and dynamic changes can also occur to the horizontal field ...

Failure characteristics of two porous sandstones subjected to true triaxial stresses

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2016
AbstractWe conducted an extensive suite of true triaxial experiments in two porous sandstones, Bentheim (porosity ≈ 24%) and Coconino (17.5%). Our experiments demonstrate that failure of both sandstones is not only a function of σ3 but also of σ2. For a given σ3, σ1 at failure (σ1,peak) increases as σ2 is raised above σ3 between tests.

Shale permeability model considering bedding effect under true triaxial stress conditions

Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering, 2019
Abstract The permeability anisotropy of shales can be attributed largely to bedding planes. It is critical to study the bedding effect on permeability evolution for shales. We conducted an experiment on shale permeability anisotropy under true triaxial stress conditions.

Dilatancy equation of rockfill material under the true triaxial stress condition

Science China Technological Sciences, 2011
Rockfill material is widely used for construction of high rockfill dam due to its facility, economical cost, high strength and effective aseismatic property. It is provoked profoundly to propose a suitable constitutive model for a better application of this material.

Brittle fracture in two crystalline rocks under true triaxial compressive stresses

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2005
Abstract We employed our new polyaxial cell to carry out true triaxial compression tests on dry (jacketed) rectangular prisms of two crystalline rocks, in which different magnitudes of the least and intermediate principal stresses σ 3 and σ 2 were maintained constant, and the ...

Large stress reversals in true triaxial tests on cross‐anisotropic sand

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2008
AbstractThe results of a series of true triaxial tests with stress paths involving large reversals under 3D conditions are presented. These tests were performed on medium dense Santa Monica Beach sand to provide experimental evidence for the rotational kinematic hardening hypothesis presented in a companion paper and to provide stress–strain and volume

Mechanical Properties of Layered Composite Coal–Rock Subjected to True Triaxial Stress

Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, 2020
Underground mining or tunnelling activity is always associated with the composite geological formations. The mechanical properties of layered composite coal–rock subjected to true triaxial stress conditions are significantly different from those under conventional triaxial or uniaxial stress conditions.

Predictions of large stress reversals in true triaxial tests on cross‐anisotropic sand

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2008
AbstractA rotational kinematic hardening constitutive model with the capability of predicting the behavior of soil during three‐dimensional stress reversals has been developed. An existing elasto‐plastic constitutive model, the Single Hardening Model, utilizing isotropic hardening serves as the basic framework in these formulations.
