True Triaxial Stresses and the Brittle Fracture of Rock
Pure and Applied Geophysics, 2006This paper reviews the efforts made in the last 100 years to characterize the effect of the intermediate principal stress σ2 on brittle fracture of rocks, and on their strength criteria. The most common theories of failure in geomechanics, such as those of Coulomb, and Mohr, disregard σ2 and are typically based on triaxial testing of cylindrical rock ...

Shear strengths of sandstone fractures under true triaxial stresses
Journal of Structural Geology, 2013Abstract True triaxial shear tests have been performed to determine the peak shear strengths of tension-induced fractures in three Thai sandstones. A polyaxial load frame is used to apply mutually perpendicular lateral stresses (σp and σo) to the 76 × 76 × 126 mm rectangular block specimens.

Petrophysical Studies of Sandstones under True-Triaxial Stress Conditions
63rd EAGE Conference & Exhibition, 2001Development of an innovative polyaxial (true-triaxial) stress loading system is described. The system was originally designed to determine ultrasonic velocities, fluid permeability and elastic properties on cubic rock specimens in which sets of orientated fractures and microcracks had been introduced.

Explorations of principal stress space with kaolin in a true triaxial apparatus
Géotechnique, 1975The Cambridge True Triaxial Apparatus permits samples of soil to be tested with independent variation of the three principal stresses. A feedback system, based on a small computer, has been attached to the apparatus and this enables any three-dimensional stress path that is desired to be followed accurately.

Strain Localization Conditions Under True Triaxial Stress States
2011This work uses a bifurcation approach to develop theoretical predictions for deformation band formation for a suite of true triaxial tests on Castlegate sandstone. In particular, the influence of the intermediate principal stress on strain localization is examined.

Limiting envelopes of a dry porous limestone under true triaxial stress states
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences, 2012Abstract The present study investigates the influences of the confining pressure and the intermediate principal stress on the mechanical behaviour of a porous limestone. True triaxial tests are carried out on a broad range of confining stresses covering both brittle and ductile regimes.

Predictions of large stress reversals in true triaxial tests on cross‐anisotropic sand
International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2008AbstractA rotational kinematic hardening constitutive model with the capability of predicting the behavior of soil during three‐dimensional stress reversals has been developed. An existing elasto‐plastic constitutive model, the Single Hardening Model, utilizing isotropic hardening serves as the basic framework in these formulations.

Deformability characteristics of a rock mass under true-triaxial stress compression
Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 2006In this paper an experimental study was planned on rock mass model with three joint sets under triaxial and true-triaxial stress states to assess the influence of joint geometry and stress ratios on deformational behaviour of rock mass. The physical models were composed of three continuous orthogonal joint sets in which joint set-I was inclined at ...

Failure characteristics of two porous sandstones subjected to true triaxial stresses
Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2016AbstractWe conducted an extensive suite of true triaxial experiments in two porous sandstones, Bentheim (porosity ≈ 24%) and Coconino (17.5%). Our experiments demonstrate that failure of both sandstones is not only a function of σ3 but also of σ2. For a given σ3, σ1 at failure (σ1,peak) increases as σ2 is raised above σ3 between tests.

Physical modeling of a rock mass under a true triaxial stress state
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences, 2004A study was planned in which several (77 nos.) scale free 15 cm size block mass models having three orthogonal continuous smooth saw cut joint sets and varying inclination '0 ' of joint set-I with horizontal were tested in true-triaxial system (TTS) developed by Rao and Tiwari (2002).
