A GPU-Based Simulation of Tsunami Propagation and Inundation

2009
Tsunami simulation consists of fluid dynamics, numerical computations, and visualization techniques. Nonlinear shallow water equations are often used to model the tsunami propagation. By adding the friction slope to the conservation of momentum, it also can model the tsunami inundation.

Propagation of Tsunami and Seismic Waves

2019
Tsunamis and seismic waves are generated by earthquakes. We often reflexively discriminate the waves into tsunami and seismic waves. However, what is the difference between tsunami and seismic waves? What is a tsunami? This is a very simple but meaningful question. This chapter investigates the propagation process of tsunami and seismic waves.

Propagation and amplification of tsunamis at coastal boundaries

Nature, 1994
WHEN tsunamis hit a coastal area, they often cause substantial damage and loss of life at locations otherwise well protected from normal (even severe) wind-generated waves. An example of such a catastrophe took place on 12 December 1992, when an earthquake of magnitude Ms = 7.5 occurred in the eastern region of Flores Island, Indonesia1,2.

Effects of bathymetry on tsunami propagation: Application of ray tracing to tsunamis

pure and applied geophysics, 1988
Ray tracing of seismic surface waves is applied to tsunami propagation to examine bathymetric effect along its propagation path. Computations are made for trans-Pacific tsunamis and for near-field tsunamis in the Japan Sea. For tsunamis across the Pacific Ocean, the comparison to a uniform ocean shows that focusing and defocusing, due to bathymetry ...

Tsunami propagation in rivers of the Japanese Islands

Continental Shelf Research, 1986
Abstract On 26 May 1983 the rivers of the Japanese Islands were invaded by a tsunami from the Sea of Japan. Water levels in five large rivers were measured and were highest midway towards the uppermost point of inundation. The level at the uppermost point was approximately the same as that at the river mouths.

On-Shelf Tsunami Generation and Coastal Propagation

1995
When a seismic event in a coastal region initiates an energetic Tsunami on the sloping shelf of that region, some of the energy propagates seaward, some of it is manifested in the run-up on the coastal segment alongside the source region and then reflected seaward and some of it, in the form of trapped “edge-waves”, propagates along the shelf with a ...

A new numerical model for propagation of tsunami waves

Kybernetika, 2007
Summary: A new model for propagation of long waves including the coastal area is introduced. This model considers only the motion of the surface of the sea under the condition of preservation of mass and the sea floor is inserted into the model as an obstacle to the motion.
