Preterm Labour: Tsunami Waves?
Journal of Neuroendocrinology, 2010SummaryPreterm labour and birth can be delayed but are generally unstoppable, threatening the health of the mother–baby duo. This may be a result of peripheral signals prematurely recruiting the oxytocin neurones that co‐ordinate the timing of birth and, via specialised activity and secretion patterns, drive uterine contractions. Once sensitised, these

Tsunami Waves of Mental Trauma
Holistic Nursing Practice, 2005As international aid agencies deal with the aftermath of the tsunami of 26 December 2004, one of their goals must be to empower local communities by incorporating long term mental health initiatives into recovery efforts. (non-author abstract)

Shallower regions in the oceans can act as lenses, focusing the energy of tsunamis, typically onto cusp points where two caustic lines meet. Diffraction theory enables calculation of the profile of a tsunami wave propagating through a cusp. The wave elevation depends on position, time and two main parameters M

On the solitary wave paradigm for tsunamis
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2008Since the 1970s, solitary waves have commonly been used to model tsunamis especially in experimental and mathematical studies. Unfortunately, the link to geophysical scales is not well established, and in this work, we question the geophysical relevance of this paradigm.

On December 26, 2004, the fourth strongest earthquake over the past century struck in the Indian Ocean off the western coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Measuring 9.0 in magnitude, the earthquake triggered massive tsunamis that struck the Indian Ocean countries and Somalia, and killed more than tens of thousands and destroyed entire villages ...

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is used to simulate both two and three-dimensional cases of wave breaking. A combined SPH-LES type scheme or sub-particle scale (SPS) scheme is used to capture coherent turbulent structures. Results are presented for weakly plunging breaking waves.

Hydrodynamics of Tsunami Waves
2007The giant tsunami that occurred in the Indian Ocean on 26th December 2004 draws attention to this natural phenomenon. The given course of lectures deals with the physics of the tsunami wave propagation from the source to the coast. Briefly, the geographical distribution of the tsunamis is described and physical mechanisms of their origin are discussed.

Methods of Tsunami Wave Registration
2015The traditional method for tsunami wave registration by coastal mareographs is described. The technique is described for measuring tsunami waves in the open ocean with the aid of bottom pressure sensors. The advantages of this technique are discussed.
