Deprived TLR9 expression in apparently healthy nasal mucosa might trigger polyp-growth in chronic rhinosinusitis patients. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The origin of nasal polyps in chronic rhinosinusitis is unknown, but the role of viral infections in polyp growth is clinically well established. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) have recently emerged as key players in our local airway defense against microbes.

Beyond Thin Film Limits—Superhard and Hydrogen‐Free Amorphous Carbon Coatings With Over 100 µm Thickness

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
For the first time, an extreme‐thick laser‐arc PVD ta‐C (DLC) coating exceeding 100 µm is demonstrated, opening up new possibilities for ultra‐high load bearing capacity. This superhard amorphous carbon architecture combines >50% sp3 bonding, robust adhesion and self‐supporting performance, shielding substrates from plastic flow under extreme contact ...

A rare nasal cavity mass in a child: Accessory middle turbinate

open access: yesSAGE Open Medical Case Reports, 2016
Objectives: The accessory middle turbinate, a rare anatomical variation of the nasal cavity, have been systematically studied in adults. Presence of accessory middle turbinate and its clinical significance in a child has not been reported.

Ultra‐Thin Tow‐Based Discontinuous Composites—Material Overview and Aspirations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Tow‐based discontinuous composites made from ultra‐thin tapes offer outstanding in‐plane mechanical properties. This material, inspired by Nacre, has high volume fraction of tapes exceeding 90 % and allows for quasi‐isotropic material plates less than 100 micrometer in thickness.

Strong Fully Reprocessable Engineered Wood Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Engineering a hyperbranched adhesive with complementary imine‐bond and hydrogen‐bond networks, combining it with wood particles to fabricate the wood composite (WP/HTP) under mild hot‐pressing conditions. The WP/HTP exhibits 100% mechanical strength recovery after three cycles of reprocessing, and the reprocessed modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of

Turning Nd‐Fe‐B Swarf Into High‐Value Bulk Feedstocks via Sustainable Hydrogen Plasma: From Rare‐Earth Oxides to Metals and Hydrides

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Oxidized Nd‐Fe‐B magnet swarf is transformed into valuable bulk feedstock through a single‐step hydrogen plasma process. The reaction converts complex rare‐earth‐containing waste into separated metallic, oxide, and hydride fractions without acid leaching.

Effect of Septoplasty on Inferior Turbinate Hypertrophy

open access: yesDiyala Journal of Medicine, 2019
Background: Septal deviation usually associated with compensatory hypertrophy of the contralateral inferior nasal turbinate. The current treatment of anterior septal deviation is septoplasty but there is controversy about surgery for the hypertrophied ...

Additively Manufactured Porous Ceramics as Tunable Dielectrics for Passive Temperature Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Porous ceramic lattices, 3D‐printed from a multicomponent oxide ink, are integrated with LC resonators for passive wireless temperature sensing. By tuning porosity, the dielectric properties and RF response are engineered to produce distinct resonant frequency shifts with temperature. The results establish a structure‐driven approach to customizing the
