Evaluation of Ensemble‐Based Extreme Forecast Diagnostics for Zonda Wind Prediction

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Zonda is a downslope windstorm on the eastern slopes of the Andes in western Argentina. This Foehn‐like phenomenon can produce hazardous, strong, and gusty downslope winds, leading to extreme and rapid warming with severe societal impacts. Despite substantial advances in numerical weather prediction, forecasting Zonda winds remains challenging.

Large eddy simulation of a homogeneously charged turbulent jet ignition system

open access: yes, 2017
Transient jet ignition of a homogeneous methane air mixture in a turbulent jet ignition system is studied computationally using a large eddy simulation turbulence model. The jet discharges from a prechamber into a main combustion chamber via one or more

Energy‐Efficient Combustion Technologies and Burner Designs for Glass Melting Furnaces

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Glass Science, Volume 17, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Glass production is one of the most energy‑intensive manufacturing processes, requiring furnace temperatures above 1600°C. These temperatures depend on burners that must balance thermal efficiency with emission reductions. This article reviews the development of combustion systems in glass furnaces, focusing on their impact on energy ...

Reduction of Oxide Inclusions During the High‐Frequency Welding of Steel via a Nonthermal Ar/H2 Plasma Jet

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 28, Issue 12, 17 June 2026.
High‐frequency (HF) welding of steel is limited by oxide inclusions that degrade weld quality. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the integration of a nonthermal Ar/H2 dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma jet into HF welding. Local plasma treatment provides effective shielding and in‐situ oxide reduction, resulting in markedly fewer and ...

Enhancing Lithium‐Metal Battery Safety and Performance with Ether‐Aided Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

open access: yesAdvanced Energy and Sustainability Research, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2026.
A new dual‐anion ionic liquid (IL) electrolyte was created using an ether‐type cosolvent, i.e., 1,2‐dimethoxyethane (DME). Adding 20 wt.% DME improves lithium‐ion mobility and helps form a stable solid electrolyte interphase. This optimized electrolyte allows for better long‐term cycling and higher capacity in lithium cells compared to the pure IL ...
