MEMORY EFFECTS IN TURBULENT TRANSPORT [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2009
In the mean-field theory of magnetic fields, turbulent transport, i.e. the turbulent electromotive force, is described by a combination of the alpha effect and turbulent magnetic diffusion, which are usually assumed to be proportional respectively to the mean field and its spatial derivatives.

Turbulence-driven vortex-flow around a magnetic island

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2023
We predict a new state of plasma self-organization, in the presence of magnetic islands, namely turbulence-driven island vortex-flows, which are non-axisymmetric flows.

Cosmic-ray Transport in Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2022
Abstract This paper studies cosmic-ray (CR) transport in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. CR transport is strongly dependent on the properties of the magnetic turbulence. We perform test particle simulations to study the interactions of CR with both total MHD turbulence and decomposed MHD modes.

Statistical Conservation Laws in Turbulent Transport [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2001
We address the statistical theory of fields that are transported by a turbulent velocity field, both in forced and in unforced (decaying) experiments. We propose that with very few provisos on the transporting velocity field, correlation functions of the transported field in the forced case are dominated by statistically preserved structures.

Self-sustained biphasic catalytic particle turbulence

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Turbulent systems are particularly suitable for heat transport. Here the authors add active particles to a turbulent system, and the coupling of turbulent convection and the collective dynamics of active particles leads to a 500% enhancement in heat ...

A Quantitative Scaling Theory for Meridional Heat Transport in Planetary Atmospheres and Oceans

open access: yesAGU Advances, 2021
The meridional temperature profile of the upper layers of planetary atmospheres is set through a balance between differential radiative heating by a nearby star, or by intrinsic heat fluxes emanating from the deep interior, and the redistribution of that

Thermal Equilibrium Curves and Turbulent Mixing in Keplerian Accretion Disks [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
We consider vertical heat transport in Keplerian accretion disks, including the effects of radiation, convection, and turbulent mixing driven by the Balbus-Hawley instability, in astronomical systems ranging from dwarf novae (DNe), and soft X-ray ...

Turbulence Suppression in Transport Barriers

open access: yesFusion Science and Technology, 2004
Basic facts about transport barriers in toroidally confined plasmas are presented. The flow shear of poloidal plasma rotation is a common feature in the spontaneous and induced transport barriers as well and is considered as the basic cause of their formation. Basic ideas on the impact of flow shear on the radial transport are discussed.

Effective diffusivity of passive scalars in rotating turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We use direct numerical simulations to compute turbulent transport coefficients for passive scalars in turbulent rotating flows. Effective diffusion coefficients in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the rotations axis are obtained by studying ...
